Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was lovely, the newbies had survived their shuttle, and yes, all the holes in the lawn from graduation had been filled and covered with new grass so everything looked normal and pretty. Well, pretty, at least.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Peridot made a little nod back, noting the peculiar language this new student, the orange tube, was using. Perhaps she'd make some effort to learn it. It had been a challenge for her to learn the written word here on Earth, as deceptively simple as it appeared, after all.

"Well," she said, looking over the selection. "There's a platter with round baked sugar discs. And another one with cubed seed-bearing flora pulp. And oh! I've seen plenty of people eating the modular triangular circle slices. You know, the ones with the cheese?"

At least she knew what cheese was.

Beaker meeped more, sounding confused, then literally threw his hands up and nodded. One of everything, please!

See, Peridot understood enthusiasm! She nodded, then grabbed a paper plate and started loading it up with food. Cookies, fruits, and a small stack of various slices of pizza.

And that entire bowl of pudding.

"How's this?"

So, so, great, going by Beaker's enthusiastic response! And pudding! Which would be so much better now that he wasn't grabbing it by the accidental handful.

He belatedly pointed to his nametag so that the small green girl (maybe?) would know his name and not call him Meep like half the school already was.

Eh, close enough to a girl, anyway. Peridot leaned in to look at the tag, and then nodded.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Beaker," she said, sounding a little as though that line was rehearsed somewhat. "I'm Peridot."

But he was welcome to call her Meep Meep if he preferred.

He meeped happily and offered her a slice of pizza.

Awww, Beaker. Peridot smiled and shook her head.

"I appreciate your offer," she replied, "but Gems like me don't eat."

Beaker took that in stride, nodding and taking a bite of the pizza himself instead. He meeped inquiringly, gesturing around the picnic.

Was it always like this?

"Hm?" Peridot glanced around thoughtfully. "The picnic? This seems pretty standard, but there are usually more people without their shirts on."

No one wanted to see Beaker with his shirt off. No one.

And Peridot was already completely naked!

"I don't know why they do it," she noted, looking thoughtfully around the picnic. "They don't run around without shirts most of the time, unless they're at the shoreline participating in recreational activities that might or might not involve actually getting wet..."

She shrugged a little.

"I don't entirely understand humans."

Clearly.

Beaker meeped sympathically. Humans--like him! He was totally a human! If you squinted!--were tough.

Peridot nodded as if any of that made any manner of sense.

"Do you understand them at all?"

Beaker waggled his hand back and forth, meeping. What they were saying? Yes. Why they did what they did?

Only sometimes.

No, no, 'Dot. Weirdos were a different species entirely.

Beaker meeped, nodding vehemently, then held up the pizza. They weren't entirely useless?

Peridot gave a knowing nod to that.

"They do like triangles, yes."

She could forgive them on that basis alone.

That hadn't been exactly what Beaker was going for, but he didn't have strong views about shapes one way or the other, so sure!

He grinned and nodded again.

It was so great that they'd reached a mutual understanding based mostly about Beaker's easygoing attitude and Peridot's willingness to just make assumptions about anything she didn't perfectly understand!

And triangles, apparently. She nodded, satisfied, and then gestured back toward the table.

"If you finish that and require more in order to fuel yourself, let me know and I'll be happy to get it."

Because, again, shorties had to look out for one another here.

He was going to spend a lot of time giving thumbs up.
