Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was lovely, the newbies had survived their shuttle, and yes, all the holes in the lawn from graduation had been filled and covered with new grass so everything looked normal and pretty. Well, pretty, at least.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Oh, look - another nonhuman face!

Hera smiled and came over. "Hi there."

Jaylah sat up a little straighter at someone approaching her, but stayed just where she was. Sort of like a cat ready to run if it chose. "Hello."

Okay, Hera could respect wariness.

"I'm Hera." She stuck out her hand. "I just figure there's few enough nonhumans we ought to stick together."

In a purely 'hey, not everyone's human' way that had nothing to do with gang wars or territorial things.

Jaylah inspected her hand before deciding that she probably didn't have a weapon in the other one. Only then did she clasp her forearm in a sort of greeting. "Jaylah. I was told to expect this amount of humans on Earth."

Hera clasped her arm back and nodded. "Earth is all humans, apart from this island. There's a few other races here, but still not that many. You're from around here, then?"

For some interpretation of 'around here' meaning 'in the same galaxy'.

"No, I am only here to attend the academy after I have completed one year here and return to space," she said, frowning because that did not sync up with what she'd been told to expect on Earth.

Hera smiled. "Ships are my home, too. Are you going to be a pilot?"

"Engineer," she replied a little proudly. Somewhere, Scotty was super proud of her as well.

"In that case, I hope you make any pilot proud to have you," Hera said, smiling. "I manage the scrapyard in town, by the way. We've got a lot of metal and machinery bits, if you ever want to tinker with some."

"A scrapyard?" She was from a planet of dead people or scavengers. That was totally new to her.

"A place where people take things they're not using anymore," Hera explained. "Often broken things or things they don't know what they are. Then other people can come and...well, theoretically buy them, I guess, but nobody's ever asked me to charge anyone for it. I think the place makes its money on the landing pad rentals."

Or just on being in Fandom.

"I will examine this scrapyard then." And probably build random things in her room. Poor, poor Norman.

"Please do," Hera said with a smile. "I'm usually there on Fridays, if you want some help moving things or seeing what they are."
