Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The nice thing about the fall welcome picnics was that, well, they didn't typically happen in the fall. It was definitely still summer in Fandom, with sunny skies and a light breeze blowing through the front lawn of the school. Folks had gotten up bright and early to make sure there were plenty of tables, chairs, and blue and gold streamers to decorate the picnic area.

And glitter. So much glitter for the new folks to learn to love.

Getting the food out was the finishing touch, and then everything was ready for the new (and not-so-new) arrivals!

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Face hadn't been on the school shuttle, thus missing the disappointment of the school's definition of 'shuttle', 'direct connecting portal' option to arrive at the causeway instead. He still wasn't entirely sure about this whole portal business (instant travel between not just worlds but dimensions, and the Empire wasn't using it to conquer more planets?), but this place definitely wasn't Lorrd.

In fact, going off his name tag, this planet was so far out of the way that the people here didn't even use the Aurebesh. Taking a stylus, he carefully wrote the glyphs for 'Face' above his name before sticking it on.

Well, he thought it was his name. It had the right number of letters at least.

Ichabod was a little excited about his role as big sibling. It hadn't been long since he had been a confused newcomer, and hopefully he could be of some help to someone in that situation.

Glancing at the name tags, he looked for the name Garik Loran. Finding the right name, he looked at the face belonging to it.

"Mr Loran? I am Ichabod Crane, and I have been assigned to be your big sibling here." He inclined his head slightly.

Cosette had gone on one of her long early morning walks today, which was the explanation for the little sprig of flowers tucked into her hair above her right ear.

The flowers drawn around her name on nametag, though, were entirely the result of the pack of colored pencils she'd bought herself yesterday. She thought they would do a nice job of drawing attention to her name (and distracting from how silly she sometimes thought that nickname could be) as she wandered around trying to keep an eye out for a nametag with her little sibling's name on it.

No, she wouldn't judge if it wasn't decorated like hers was.

There was more glitter here. Why was there more glitter here? Was there some kind of glitter mine on the island or something?

Seriously, there was no reason for that much glitter. Anywhere. In the world, never mind congregating in one place.

Evie gingerly put her nametag on, already trying to figure out what this 'big sister' of hers would have to teach her. Were they really going to leave orientation up to a bunch of students?

Barry was there to meet his little sib. And despite the shenanigans he had been involved with in the past week, he looked to be in a fairly cheerful mood.

Or at least as good a mood as Barry could be in.

And really he should probably be looking for his sib instead of having his eyes glued to his tablet that he was reading.

By the time they'd made it to the school, Travis was a little more awake than he had been. There had been no falling asleep with his face smushed against the shuttle window or anything and for that, he was grateful.

Now, he was just taking in the place while he waited for his school assigned big sibling. His old school didn't have anything like that which had him labeling this place as new age or something similar.

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

215 - Garik "Face" Loran and Travis Coates
315 - Mara Jade and Johnny Storm
330 - Evangeline Greene and Cosette Fauchlevent
415 - Gwen Stacy

The letters were different, but the digits were close enough that Face was able to figure out where he was supposed to be staying.

What were the odds that the person she'd been assigned to share a room with now had the kind of pets that Evan had? Probably not high, and Cosette knew better than to get her hopes up about that kind of thing, but it wasn't as if she was terribly picky.

Curious, though, and even eager. New people!

Johnny looked at the list. And jeez, he was becoming convinced that he was dreaming. Now on top of everything, somebody decided to room him with the cute, red-headed British girl.

The only way this could be more ridiculous was if Jade was actually Mara's twin sister and this was a paprwork error that meant they were both rooming with Johnny. But he wasn't expecting that.

Gwen had not even considered that she would have a roommate. She was an only child, she had her own room at the Parkers', she'd probably terrify anyone who had to live with her, and so it was with a little bit of anxiety that she looked over the list...

Anyone wondering why there was a lot of shouting at the school gate a few moments ago didn't have to look any further than the man standing here. A man named Jayne Cobb.

Jayne wasn't exactly sure why he had to give up all his weapons ("Even Vera?") or how Zoe ended up here ("Alternate reality-what?") but he was clearly not happy. Actually he was fuming and looked like he was going to explode at the slightest provocation.

You have to wonder what his reaction is going to be when he finds out his teaching buddy is a pink talking pony.

Yeah, okay, it was weird being on this side of the... everything, really. Not that Atton showed it. He had a bottle of water - not disguised as anything else this time - from which he sipped periodically.

Other than the black Jedi tunic under his jacket and the black wrappings which made a slightly shoddier-looking version of his old fingerless gloves, he didn't look much different than the way he'd done when he went to school here.

He vaguely wondered if that meant he should pin on a label saying 'not a student', or something. Probably not.

Even the promise of juice bags from the clinic (what? they said it was a picnic!) was not enough to lure Navaan out to the lawn until dusk. Look, she knew there were other doctors on the island. She wasn't about to let them catch her out during the full light of day.

After the sun started sinking and Navaan judged it dark enough to go out without having to worry too much about exploding, she headed out to the picnic to see if there were any juice bags left.

Or people to bang.

Or...right, wasn't she supposed to meet with someone? Eh! Whatever. It would come to her. Until then...

So, Karla had gotten a letter from Fandom telling her to show up here and now. That, coupled with the date, should probably have been enough to clue her in to things being hinky, but she'd gotten a fair bit of mind-blowing information the day before and so she wasn't firing on all cylinders.

As it was, she was trying to figure out why she'd get summoned to a Fandom welcome picnic. Had the moose forgotten she'd graduated last summer? Was the date on the letter wrong? Was she supposed to meet with someone else and the picnic was just a happy coincidence?

Reno got to drive the bus! And torment the new kids! Or, some of 'em, anyway. He was still going to consider that a win.

He was also going to seat himself at a picnic table with a plate of chicken wings, mulling over the faces in the crowd, both new and old.

Ghanima was smiling as she walked on to the lawn of the school, her hair down and the sands of Dune still clinging to the hem of her stillsuit's cloak. Her portal had been far out in the deep desert this time, and she had opted to come straight to the picnic rather than return to her suite at the Arms and change.

Which meant it was one sun-kissed Ghanima, mask-off and hood thrown back, helping herself to a large glass of water as she shook dust out of her hair. Not looking her most Empress-y, perhaps, but all Ghani of the desert and not Atreides of the court.

Zoe was normally in a pretty good mood on picnic days, but seeing Jayne - not her Jayne of course, because she didn't get nice things like that - had her a little stressed out. Someday, she was going to sneak booze onto the drink table for moments like this.

Kitty did not get paid enough for shenanigans, no, but they did go all out on free food at picnics and it wasn't raining anything weird today so she'd take it. And, as always, she was totally checking to see if she recognized anyone from home, or at least alternate universe versions of home.

Anakin arrived with a coffee in one hand, running late because he'd had to take Juliet to swimming class instead of drive the bus this time.

His eyes scanned the newcomers' faces and he froze at a familiar redhead with a very familiar Force-signature.

"Sithspit," he groaned, ducking behind a tree and withdrawing completely from the Force while he left a frantic message for Jaina. Until she called back: hiding. Allll the hiding.
