Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The nice thing about the fall welcome picnics was that, well, they didn't typically happen in the fall. It was definitely still summer in Fandom, with sunny skies and a light breeze blowing through the front lawn of the school. Folks had gotten up bright and early to make sure there were plenty of tables, chairs, and blue and gold streamers to decorate the picnic area.

And glitter. So much glitter for the new folks to learn to love.

Getting the food out was the finishing touch, and then everything was ready for the new (and not-so-new) arrivals!

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Yeah, okay, it was weird being on this side of the... everything, really. Not that Atton showed it. He had a bottle of water - not disguised as anything else this time - from which he sipped periodically.

Other than the black Jedi tunic under his jacket and the black wrappings which made a slightly shoddier-looking version of his old fingerless gloves, he didn't look much different than the way he'd done when he went to school here.

He vaguely wondered if that meant he should pin on a label saying 'not a student', or something. Probably not.

"For the record, it is so fucking weird to see you over on the teacher's side of the picnic," Sparkle reported, walking up to Atton with a grin.

He wasn't super thrilled to be back on the island after a week spent back in Toronto, but hey, there had to be worse places to be. Somewhere.

"Yeah, it is weird," Atton said. He shot Sparkle a look. "You think if the two of us walked over to the other side of the picnic, people'd take me for a student again? Because I'm willing to try."

Sparkle gave Atton a critical sort of once-over at that. Well, it had been a few years, but...

"Sure," he decided. "It's mostly in the attitude, anyway. Think you can pull off 'pissy teenager' these days?"

'Course he could. Atton could give Sparkle a run for the money in the acting department when he wanted to.

"Eh, probably," he said. "C'mon. Let's see if someone's spiked the anything yet."

Because that was what the punch bowl needed. Cinnamon whiskey. Nobody would ever notice that was there.

"Nice," Atton said approvingly.

Look, he never claimed to be real teacher material. "I stocked up on whiskey at my place, but it didn't seem like the right day for it. Too sunny."

"Yeah, sunny days and neat whiskey don't really go hand-in-hand," Sparkle agreed, turning to amble toward the food tables. "It's more a 'mixed drinks or cold beer' kind of day, anyway. And beer tastes like shit in fruit punch. Probably."

He'd never tried.

Now he kind of wanted to.

"Does it?" Atton said thoughtfully. "Don't you have those, uh, fruit beers?"

"Sure, but I think they're actually brewed with the fruit," Sparkle speculated. "Probably depends on the beer, too. Like, ha, you almost have to mix American beer just to get it to taste like something, right?"

Canadian beer feelings.

"But, you know, now I want to just mix beer with stuff and see what happens."

"Hey, maybe we can come up with a way to work that into class or something," Atton said.

No, seriously, why did anyone think he was a responsible adult. "How've you been, anyway?"

"Been?" Sparkle gave that little grin-and-shrug combo that said that he was absolutely about to spin his story around the wrong way right then, yes. "Everything's fucking great. Got to spend some time back in Canada, only wound up beating up one of the other kids at the home the one time - he had it coming, he tried to steal my socks again - and Lewis can't wrap his head around how I managed to stay on my best behaviour on the island while still being a rotten little shit in Toronto, like it's some great mystery. So, I get to come back here, because he wants me to spend as little time in juvie as possible before I graduate. That's fucking awesome."

And totally skirted around the 'plus I died again, that was great,' thing. Which really would have just been like saying, 'Same old,' anyway.

"Same old," Atton said vaguely, which was code for 'I don't want to talk about it until I have a few drinks in me'. "Got drunk, signed up for this mess, came here. Talked to Anakin's kid, I have no idea how he wound up functional."

"I was thinking about bringing a bar with me everywhere I went, just to make it easier," Atton said dryly. "But I got all tangled up in logistics."

"A class on surviving the universe in general when you're not a superhero on top of the world," Atton said mildly, "But you might have to deal with them anyway."

"This semester, Technology," she said. "Trying to help out the kids who come here and don't know what the computer does or how great the TV is."

"Useful," Atton had to admit. "Might actually save me a few headaches if some of my more archaic kids take your class. If I have any, I don't know."

He hadn't actually looked at any of the literature.
