Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The nice thing about the fall welcome picnics was that, well, they didn't typically happen in the fall. It was definitely still summer in Fandom, with sunny skies and a light breeze blowing through the front lawn of the school. Folks had gotten up bright and early to make sure there were plenty of tables, chairs, and blue and gold streamers to decorate the picnic area.

And glitter. So much glitter for the new folks to learn to love.

Getting the food out was the finishing touch, and then everything was ready for the new (and not-so-new) arrivals!

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Anyone wondering why there was a lot of shouting at the school gate a few moments ago didn't have to look any further than the man standing here. A man named Jayne Cobb.

Jayne wasn't exactly sure why he had to give up all his weapons ("Even Vera?") or how Zoe ended up here ("Alternate reality-what?") but he was clearly not happy. Actually he was fuming and looked like he was going to explode at the slightest provocation.

You have to wonder what his reaction is going to be when he finds out his teaching buddy is a pink talking pony.

It would be a thing to see, to say the least.

The shouting just made Jayne even easier to find! Pinkie was entirely undaunted by the sheer volume of crankiness that her new teaching buddy -- and yes, she just assumed the cranky guy was her new teaching buddy and even if he wasn't he clearly required some guidance and who was she not to help a fellow in need?! -- and came trotting up with a big, bright, friendly smile on her face.

"Hihihihihihihi!" she greeted at tremendous volume. "I'm Pinkie Pie! What's your name?"

Jayne didn't say anything. His eyes just got a little wider, followed by a tilt of his head signifying confusion.

And then there was the slow reaching out with an index finger to poke the pink talking pony to make sure it was real.

Yeah, okay, it was weird being on this side of the... everything, really. Not that Atton showed it. He had a bottle of water - not disguised as anything else this time - from which he sipped periodically.

Other than the black Jedi tunic under his jacket and the black wrappings which made a slightly shoddier-looking version of his old fingerless gloves, he didn't look much different than the way he'd done when he went to school here.

He vaguely wondered if that meant he should pin on a label saying 'not a student', or something. Probably not.

"For the record, it is so fucking weird to see you over on the teacher's side of the picnic," Sparkle reported, walking up to Atton with a grin.

He wasn't super thrilled to be back on the island after a week spent back in Toronto, but hey, there had to be worse places to be. Somewhere.

"Yeah, it is weird," Atton said. He shot Sparkle a look. "You think if the two of us walked over to the other side of the picnic, people'd take me for a student again? Because I'm willing to try."

Even the promise of juice bags from the clinic (what? they said it was a picnic!) was not enough to lure Navaan out to the lawn until dusk. Look, she knew there were other doctors on the island. She wasn't about to let them catch her out during the full light of day.

After the sun started sinking and Navaan judged it dark enough to go out without having to worry too much about exploding, she headed out to the picnic to see if there were any juice bags left.

Or people to bang.

Or...right, wasn't she supposed to meet with someone? Eh! Whatever. It would come to her. Until then...

So, Karla had gotten a letter from Fandom telling her to show up here and now. That, coupled with the date, should probably have been enough to clue her in to things being hinky, but she'd gotten a fair bit of mind-blowing information the day before and so she wasn't firing on all cylinders.

As it was, she was trying to figure out why she'd get summoned to a Fandom welcome picnic. Had the moose forgotten she'd graduated last summer? Was the date on the letter wrong? Was she supposed to meet with someone else and the picnic was just a happy coincidence?

[OOC note: Hannibal's thread is chronologically first. As her Teaching Buddy, he gets the privilege of breaking her brain!]

Hannibal had the benefit this time of knowing the new instructor he'd been assigned to, so he wasn't left wandering and looking at name tags.

Instead, he was coming up to Karla with a smile and a large insulated bag. "Karla. It's good to see you; I had worried you might have changed your mind after your little adventure this week which I assume someone has handwavily told him about by now." He reached out with his free hand for a shake or hug.

Pfftf, Hannibal got hugs. If he didn't want hugs, he shouldn't have fathered a child on her in some random alternate reality.

Though, right now, she was kind of mentally shying away from anything that had to do with the idea of fathering children.

Reno got to drive the bus! And torment the new kids! Or, some of 'em, anyway. He was still going to consider that a win.

He was also going to seat himself at a picnic table with a plate of chicken wings, mulling over the faces in the crowd, both new and old.

Ghanima spotted a familiar shock of red hair through the crowd and her smile grew wider as she made her way over to him. "Imagine my surprise," she called, tossing him an apple from the sleeve of her cloak, "--when I received my confirmation of my contract continuance for the school year, and saw I had been assigned a 'teaching buddy?'"

Reno actually cackled as he caught the apple, buffing it casually on the sleeve of his jacket.

"Imagine my surprise when I found out who my teaching buddy was gonna be, yo," he chuckled. "Is here where I say something mystical and cryptic about how the student has now become the teacher, or is that gonna net me extra laps around the island in the mornings?"

Because of course if Ghanima was back, he was going to assume that their morning training sessions were back on. Why wouldn't they be?

Ghanima was smiling as she walked on to the lawn of the school, her hair down and the sands of Dune still clinging to the hem of her stillsuit's cloak. Her portal had been far out in the deep desert this time, and she had opted to come straight to the picnic rather than return to her suite at the Arms and change.

Which meant it was one sun-kissed Ghanima, mask-off and hood thrown back, helping herself to a large glass of water as she shook dust out of her hair. Not looking her most Empress-y, perhaps, but all Ghani of the desert and not Atreides of the court.

Zoe was normally in a pretty good mood on picnic days, but seeing Jayne - not her Jayne of course, because she didn't get nice things like that - had her a little stressed out. Someday, she was going to sneak booze onto the drink table for moments like this.

Jayne still did not understand the whole alternate universe thing. He may never understand alternate universes. Sorry Zoe.

"We're supposed to teach? Does Mal know about this? I thought we were supposed to sell that equipment to Patience on Whitefall," Jayne ranted after stomping over from his conversation with Pinkie. "What kind of Gǒu shǐ yúchǔn dài is this place? What's the scam?"

And more importantly: "I'm still getting 10%, right?"

Priorities people.

Zoe sighed, and tried to count in her head for a bit to keep her cool. Why couldn't Mal have been the one to land here? Of course, there were worse options too...

"Yes, you're supposed to teach. This is a school," she said. "There's no scam aside from getting paid nicely to work about once a week. You'll get used to it if you decide to stick around." Or not, since she knew who she was talking to.

Kitty did not get paid enough for shenanigans, no, but they did go all out on free food at picnics and it wasn't raining anything weird today so she'd take it. And, as always, she was totally checking to see if she recognized anyone from home, or at least alternate universe versions of home.

Anakin arrived with a coffee in one hand, running late because he'd had to take Juliet to swimming class instead of drive the bus this time.

His eyes scanned the newcomers' faces and he froze at a familiar redhead with a very familiar Force-signature.

"Sithspit," he groaned, ducking behind a tree and withdrawing completely from the Force while he left a frantic message for Jaina. Until she called back: hiding. Allll the hiding.

All the hiding in the world couldn't save you from everyone, Anakin. Like from a grumpy blonde witch who could track psychic scents and had just discovered Fandom's latest bit of whimsy.

"I'm teaching?!" she demanded, figuring the Dean of Students would know something about her new job. "Don't I get a say in this? Aren't I supposed to know about this? In advance? And--are you hiding behind a tree?!"
