Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The nice thing about the fall welcome picnics was that, well, they didn't typically happen in the fall. It was definitely still summer in Fandom, with sunny skies and a light breeze blowing through the front lawn of the school. Folks had gotten up bright and early to make sure there were plenty of tables, chairs, and blue and gold streamers to decorate the picnic area.

And glitter. So much glitter for the new folks to learn to love.

Getting the food out was the finishing touch, and then everything was ready for the new (and not-so-new) arrivals!

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Anyone wondering why there was a lot of shouting at the school gate a few moments ago didn't have to look any further than the man standing here. A man named Jayne Cobb.

Jayne wasn't exactly sure why he had to give up all his weapons ("Even Vera?") or how Zoe ended up here ("Alternate reality-what?") but he was clearly not happy. Actually he was fuming and looked like he was going to explode at the slightest provocation.

You have to wonder what his reaction is going to be when he finds out his teaching buddy is a pink talking pony.

It would be a thing to see, to say the least.

The shouting just made Jayne even easier to find! Pinkie was entirely undaunted by the sheer volume of crankiness that her new teaching buddy -- and yes, she just assumed the cranky guy was her new teaching buddy and even if he wasn't he clearly required some guidance and who was she not to help a fellow in need?! -- and came trotting up with a big, bright, friendly smile on her face.

"Hihihihihihihi!" she greeted at tremendous volume. "I'm Pinkie Pie! What's your name?"

Jayne didn't say anything. His eyes just got a little wider, followed by a tilt of his head signifying confusion.

And then there was the slow reaching out with an index finger to poke the pink talking pony to make sure it was real.

Pinkie let out a little "teehee" almost exactly like that emitted by the Pilsbury Doughboy when poked. She lifted a hoof and poked back.

She was certain this was a cultural thing.

Jayne pulled back a little after getting poked by the hoof.

"Ching-wah TSAO duh liou mahng!¹ What the gorram hell is a Pinkie Pie?!"

Wow, Pinkie didn't understand half of what he said at all. How neat!

"I am, silly!" she said. "I bet you've never met a talking pony before, but before I came to Fandom, I'd never met a talking human! Or any human! What was that stuff you said? I didn't recognize it at allllll, but it sounds pretty!"

"My name's Jayne Cobb," he growled trying to resist poking Pinkie again. "Am I hallucinatin' or something?"

Did that prissy doctor put something in his food? Or River? It'd be like River to drug him for sport.

"Oh yay!" Pinkie cheered. "You are my new teaching buddy! We're gonna be the bestest of friends!" That was unlikely. But she was ever so optimistic. "And nope. That's a pretty common misconception. I'm just an earth pony from Equestria."

"Teaching?" Jayne said with a scowl. "What kind of gorram place is this?"

"It's a school!" Pinkie said, hooves thrust cheerfully into the air. "What's 'gorram' mean?"

"It means gorram," Jayne grunted. "What do you think it's supposed to mean?"

He looked around and slowly came to a realization.

"Wait. I'm supposed to teach?"

Somebody had made a horrible mistake.

"Yeeeeees?" Pinkie said.

Forgive her, she was trying to work out how "gorram" meant "gorram". Context-wise, it sounded kinda dirty.

"You didn't know you were gonna teach?"

"Am I getting paid?"

Ooo, there was more of that pretty language! Pinkie made a mental note of the phrase to use it in casual conversation later.

"Probably," she said. "I make more than enough bits a week to keep me in hay and balloons. I could probably buy myself a whole spare party cannon, by now."

That last bit finally caught Jayne's attention. "You have a cannon? What caliber?"

"Ooo, I'm not sure," Pinkie said. "Let's see." She yanked the cannon out from offscreen somewhere Jayne wasn't looking. It was pastel blue and had flowers on the wheels. Pinkie tipped it up towards the sky and scanned the underside. "Where does it say the caliber on it?"

Jayne boggled for moment. "Never seen a cannon like that before..."

He paused. Something wasn't right here.

Wait. It'll come to him.

Waaaaaaaaait.

"Wait! Why do you get a weapon here and I don't?!"

Poor Jayne and his lack of party cannon knowledge.

"I don't have a weapon," Pinkie said. Never mind the fact that she had, in fact, occasionally used the party cannon as a weapon. She'd also once used her best friend as a weapon, sooooooo.

Jayne frowned and pointed at the cannon sitting in front of them. "Then what in rutting hell do you call that?" He asked.

"It's my party cannon!" She was certain she'd mentioned that. "Wanna see?" And she aimed the cannon -- at Jayne -- and fired, letting loose a stream of festive party gear, balloons and streamers and confetti, as well as a jaunty party hat which would float down to land precisely atop Jayne's head.
