Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The nice thing about the fall welcome picnics was that, well, they didn't typically happen in the fall. It was definitely still summer in Fandom, with sunny skies and a light breeze blowing through the front lawn of the school. Folks had gotten up bright and early to make sure there were plenty of tables, chairs, and blue and gold streamers to decorate the picnic area.

And glitter. So much glitter for the new folks to learn to love.

Getting the food out was the finishing touch, and then everything was ready for the new (and not-so-new) arrivals!

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Was that a complete lack of recognition despite Face using his real name?, Oh sweet, sweet anonymity. (Enjoy it while it lasts, Face.)

"I prefer Face," he said with a grin. "Pretty much no one calls me Mr Loran." And not just because of that whole 'faked his death' thing.

"Face," Ichabod repeated, wondering what explanation was behind the nickname. It was hard not to notice the scar across otherwise good-looking features, and he hoped it didn't have to do with that injury.

"And where are you from, Face?" Ichabod continued. "I believe you will be surprised by how different places the students here come from."

It wasn't, but if Ichabod suggested it, he'd probably start introducing himself as 'Scar' Loran or something.

"People from lots of different systems then?" That was probably not what Ichabod meant, Face. "I just came from Lorrd myself."

Ichabod wasn't sure what he meant about systems, but as to not complicate things he said:

"I have to admit I have never heard of Lorrd. I am from Oxford, in England, myself, although I left there in the year of 1771."

"Well, it's in the Outer Rim, but I was born on one of the Core Worlds, Pantolomin." Surprise, Ichabod, that wasn't an English accent Face had. "To be fair, I've never heard of Oxford, either. Or Earth before a few weeks ago."

The year 1771 part he'd leave be for a while, since he wasn't sure what calendars they used here.

Yes, Ichabod had thought Face might be a fellow countryman. Then again, this was Fandom.

"So, you are from another planet?" he said, a little proud to at least understand the concept so quickly. "Do you travel by 'space ships'?"

He still hadn't seen one, and the idea was, he had to admit, intriguing.

Face nodded. "Pretty much." He was going to guess that Ichabod was from this one. "Yeah, I do. Usually, at least, I got one of those portals today."

Man, that was still so weird to say.

"My roommate has a 'space ship' but I have yet to see it," Ichabod said. "So, did you expect to come here to to some other place?"

Because that was a relevant question too.

"Really?" Well, that was definitely relevant to Face's interests. "Did he happen to mention which model?"

"I did, even if I'm still kind of iffy on where here is." Portals, man.

"As I wasn't even aware of the existence of such vessels, we didn't get to the point of discussing models," Ichabod explained. "But I am sure Andros would be happy to inform you."

"And here is Fandom island, of the coast of Maryland, which is now a part of the United States of America. On Earth." It was best to be precise, Ichabod felt.

He made a note of the name to look up later.

"And London and Oxford are also on Earth?" Face checked.

"Oh, they are," Ichabod replied. "Across the Atlantic ocean, however, which in my time is quite a long journey. What is your planet like?" It still felt odd asking a question like that.

"Lorrd's a nice, quiet, out of the way place full of artists, actors, and academics," Face said. "Pantolomin's busier, lots of tourists come from all over the galaxy to see the reefs."

"Your time?" That was an odd way of phrasing it.

"Oh, yes. My time is 1771, but here it is 2014. It was quite a surprise to me when I arrived, to say the least." Ichabod gave him an amused look. "I'm still not quite used to the customs of this era."

"Well I'm not familiar with them at all," Face said cheerfully. "So it'll be a learning experience."

Clearly, nothing could go wrong here.
