Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The nice thing about the fall welcome picnics was that, well, they didn't typically happen in the fall. It was definitely still summer in Fandom, with sunny skies and a light breeze blowing through the front lawn of the school. Folks had gotten up bright and early to make sure there were plenty of tables, chairs, and blue and gold streamers to decorate the picnic area.

And glitter. So much glitter for the new folks to learn to love.

Getting the food out was the finishing touch, and then everything was ready for the new (and not-so-new) arrivals!

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"No, it's in the Kanz Sector." Europe wasn't a sector, Face. "In the Outer Rim," he added for good measure.

"Yeah, I have no idea where that is," Travis admitted, wincing. "Asia, maybe? Geography wasn't my best subject. I couldn't even tell you where China was on a good day."

He could probably get close, though! Maybe.

"Hang on." Face had a bad feeling about this, he'd been hoping Ichabod was an exception, not the rule. "We are talking about where in the galaxy, right? Not on this planet."

"Galaxies?" Travis's head gave a little throb at what could possibly be coming next. He blinked. "I'm talking about this planet. Only time I've ever been to other galaxies were in some fever dreams I had awhile ago."

Face didn't have a facepalm icon yet, but if he did he'd be tempted to use it. "Lorrd isn't a country, it's a planet."

"...of course it is." Special circumstances indeed. Travis rubbed the side of his head and laughed ruefully. "Europe's a country and Asia's a continent. I was way off."

He was so not telling anyone at home about this place. Not until he understood it himself.

"A planet? That's...you're an alien?"

It was the best word he had, sorry Face.

"No," Face replied. "I'm human." He wasn't going to get into whether Lorrdians counted as humans or near humans, they're be here all day.

"Not there's anything wrong with being non-human."

"No, of course not." Except that he'd never met anyone from another planet and didn't really know what to expect. "Uh, sorry sorry. I've just never met anyone from another planet. Didn't know it was even possible."

Maybe space travel had progressed pretty far in those five years he was dead? Or maybe this place was really that special.

"Really?" Face was getting an idea of just how out of the way this planet was. "It's pretty common where I'm from."

"I'm not really up to date on Earth's space travels but last I checked, we'd landed on the moon and...that's about it," Travis said once he'd thought about it. "Makes us seem pretty technologically backwards to you, I guess."

The moon? They had those portals and they'd only gotten as far as the moon?

"Well, I wouldn't say backwards, exactly." But only because his parents had at least tried to raise him to be polite.

In his defense, he didn't know about portals just yet either. He'd arrived via two vehicles with four wheels. So backwards. Though, Kyle's truck was very nice.

Anyway.

"Nice of you to say," Travis said, giving him a quick smile. "Uh, I'm from a place called Kansas. It's in the middle of his country. Not very exciting at all."

Face would definitely use the word backwards when he found out about the wheels. Who used wheels any more?

"I'm sure it's not that boring," Face said. "I mean, Lorrd's pretty out of the way. Quiet." Very few Imperials.

"How'd you end up all the way here?" Travis asked curiously. "I didn't realize schools were stretching their recruiting muscles that far."

"You know how it is, tool around on the holonet, see an advert." Figure it'd be a good place to lie even lower while faking your death. "The usual thing. How about you?"

"Needed a change of surroundings." Somewhere no one knew him or what his scar was and where no one was sending him incredibly uncomfortable fan mail. "If I have to go to school, might as well be somewhere nice."

Face had found that being dead had drastically reduced the weird fanmail he got...meddages from his folks suggested they weren't so lucky.

"Well it is a nice school," he said. "...is it normal for schools on this planet to be castles?"

"Pretty sure...no, it's not normal," he said, squinting up at the castle. "I mean, some boarding schools have some big buildings but I've never seen anything like this. Someone's gotta be loaded around here."

"Even loaded people where I'm from don't live in castles," Face said. "Very nice houses and apartments, but not castles. Unless they're royal or something."

"Maybe that's the reason?" Travis honestly didn't know. He shrugged. "Maybe there's a prince or a princess or a duchess or something around here? I don't know what sense that makes for someone like that to be here but not much about this is making sense to me."

Well, there was a former child-actor, but Face didn't think that rated a castle, healthy self-esteem or no. "There's nothing for it, we'll have to find them," he declared. "If they exist."

"And do what with them?" Travis wondered, snickering a bit. "Ask them to adopt us into their presumably rich and royal family?"

"You're not wrong," Travis said, stroking his chin. "My family's got some debt we could afford to pay off. Of course, I'm sure they'd be a little angry if, to do that, I was adopted into another family but trade offs."
