Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The nice thing about the fall welcome picnics was that, well, they didn't typically happen in the fall. It was definitely still summer in Fandom, with sunny skies and a light breeze blowing through the front lawn of the school. Folks had gotten up bright and early to make sure there were plenty of tables, chairs, and blue and gold streamers to decorate the picnic area.

And glitter. So much glitter for the new folks to learn to love.

Getting the food out was the finishing touch, and then everything was ready for the new (and not-so-new) arrivals!

[This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I prefer to think of it as you get to live with me," Johnny said. "But I am biased towards myself as a roommate."

"You're biased toward yourself in general," Mara replied.

"This is true," Johnny said without any shame. "If it helps, I've lived with my sister all my life. I know how to live with a girl without getting all pervy."

"'Pervy?'" Mara echoed, scrunching up her face in confusion.

Please define that, Johnny. Go ahead.

"Okay, I spent a couple weeks in Britain recently, I know they have that word over there. They just say it more politely than me," Johnny said.

Mara looked more confused. "You think I'm from Britain?"

That could work for a cover...

"You're not?" Johnny asked. "That accent isn't Australian. I know that, I've dated Australians. So what is that accent?"

See how he steered the conversation away from being pervy? Johnny was an expert at that. It came up more often than he would ever admit.

"I'm from Imperial Center," she said. "It's far, far away."

"Apparently. I've never heard of it," Johnny noted. "What country is it in?"

Mara looked at him a little pityingly. "It's on a different planet."

"Oh! Sorry, I'm used to aliens looking a little less, you know, cute," Johnny said. "Wait, you're not Chitauri, are you? Because the shapeshifting thing is cheating."

"I'm not Chitauri," Mara said, slipping right past the part where he said she was cute. "I'm human. Just not from here."

"Huh. I didn't know that was possible," Johnny said. He shrugged. "I'm not the xenobiologist in the family anyway. So what brings you to Earth? And don't say invasion. Even if that's the case, I don't want to deal with that on my first day here."

"I'm just here to learn," Mara said with a tiny smile. "It's important to be well-rounded."
