Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

Ender didn't drink alcohol, and he didn't have any reasons to start - so no, he hadn't broken out the booze. In fact, he supported a faint smile and a relaxed expression that belied the fact he was keeping very close track of everyone at the picnic.

Cara resisted the urge to shake her head, hearing without her ears was never not going to be odd.

Of course Surreal was going to saunter over to the totally friendly and approachable member of the faculty. She was contrary that way.

"So," she said by way of greeting, calling in a flask and offering to the blonde woman beside her. "I hear you're my assigned 'teacher.'"

Kate was totally here! And not breaking out any booze. Even if that might have helped with how weirded out she felt, because she felt really weirded out. She was used to these picnics from a different perspective.

And now she was scanning the crowd for any familiar faces, and also for her teaching buddy.

Her teaching buddy had also not broken out the booze. It was possible that she wasn't entirely clear on booze as a concept in general.

She had, however, broken out the sugar. And more sugar. And -- well, you get the idea.

She was sproinging extra high as she made her way through the crowd looking for her newest teaching buddy. "Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate," she sang. "Oh Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate!"

Jono wasn't going to break out the booze for pretty obvious reasons.

But he was here, sadly without having painted a Union Jack on the shuttle, and looking about curiously to see if there were any new faces that hadn't taken the bus.

All of the teachers this term seemed to be Fandomites or past Fandomites already. Interesting.

Riley wasn't much of a booze drinker so he wasn't going to be breaking any out for any reason. No one needed to see a drunk version of himself. He was perfectly content wandering around and drinking some water he'd snagged.

Reno had plans to break out the booze. Later. After the picnic. Because somewhere in the past several years, apparently he'd gone from being the kid who always spiked the punch at the dances to the slightly more mature guy who hoarded his alcohol all to himself.

Yes, that was Reno's definition of maturity these days.

In any case, he was grinning as he lounged back against one of the picnic tables, looking around at the new faces. He didn't recognize most of 'em, but that didn't seem to bother him much. It was good to be back.

None of Herc's ghosts had showed up to stun him this semester, so he hadn't broken out the booze just yet. How long this state of affairs would last remained to be seen.

Max, on the other hand, was thrilled to be here as usual. People! New people!

It was at least two or three hours too early for Jack to break out the booze, so she was disappointingly sober when she got to the picnic and went to stand with the other teachers. Her arms were folded,and she was on alert for anybody with biotic potential -- or, if not that, anybody who looked like they wouldn't bore her.

Most of the attention Cara was paying to her new fellow teachers was idle automatic threat assessment, but if she was checking Jack out as much sizing her up, well, she could still admire an interesting view.

Zoe wasn't drinking yet, but she did have some soda in her hand as she surveyed the crowd. Grace was running around but Zoe was looking more for familiar faces and people who looked hopelessly lost. This was always an interesting day and she was eager to see who the shuttle had brought this time.

Kenzi was more the person who caused the booze-drinking than the one who was going to need it. She was looking far too pleased with herself with a name-tag that said I AM A PROFESSOR, ASK ME HOW!!

Kitty didn't have a teaching buddy, so she probably didn't have to be here, but there was free food and people and a chance to see if anyone else from her universe was going to show up.

Also she was maybe trying to check out who all her new coworkers were without trying to be too obvious about it.
