Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kitty didn't have a teaching buddy, so she probably didn't have to be here, but there was free food and people and a chance to see if anyone else from her universe was going to show up.

Also she was maybe trying to check out who all her new coworkers were without trying to be too obvious about it.

It had been a little while (okay a long while) since he had spoken to Kitty and Stiles decided to thank her in person for her gift while he could. "Hey."

"Hey," she smiled. "First event as a graduate. How's it feel?"

"Awkward," he said. "Saw a girl I know from Beacon Hills but she apparently doesn't know me."

"Always weird when that happens," said Kitty, who'd mostly been on the other end of that. "Friend of yours?"

"Not really," he said. "Just somebody who shared some random facts about the space between life and death and Japanese demons with us one day. Never thought I'd see her here."

Yeah, Stiles, people did exist outside of your group of friends who had their own lives. Who knew?

"If a horde of demons attacks- not outside the realm of possibility- she'll be useful," Kitty reasoned.

"Maybe. She might just be a book nerd," he said with a shrug. "So how have you been?"

He kind of knew part of the answer.

"Hoping the summer doesn't suck." Because the winter and spring had been bad. So bad. "You?"

"I'm...surprisingly good for the most part." 'Cause the not sleeping and nightmares had been happening for awhile and surely it wouldn't lead to anything worse, right? Right. "Kind of waiting for some shoes to drop though."

"It's okay, I'm pretty sure I'm getting your shoes dropping, too. Should give you a reprieve," Kitty decided, hoping that was true.

"I don't think shoe droppage works that way," Stiles said. "Pretty sure you can hoist them on other people. We all have our respective shoes."

"Kinda want to talk to whoever makes the shoe rules," Kitty said.

"Respective shoes seems fair though," Stiles said. "Otherwise people would be throwing their shoes at other people."

This metaphor was getting away from him.

"I dunno, that sounds kind of great. Think of the justice in throwing your shoe at someone who deserved it more." She was both talking about the metaphor and real shoes.

"Not sure if anybody deserves my shoes," he said. "Maybe if there were a way to dump the shoes into the ocean. Or like a cave."

"Get some real catharsis by thowing 'em in a bonfire," Kitty suggested.

"Seriously," he said with a sigh. "Too bad we're forced to deal with our shoes."

Kitty looked down at her feet. "Is it wrong I want to take these off now? I'm sort of mad at my actual shoes."

"They're nice shoes," he said, looking down at them himself.

"Thanks. They're really comfortable," she said. "I'm glad your metaphorical shoes are leaving you alone for the moment, anyway."

"Me too. I mean--things aren't perfect," he said. "But I'm happier than I have been."

"Good. You deserve it." She really did mean that, and she didn't exactly need to ask why. "Same non-perfect stuff as before?"

"If by that you mean nemeton stuff then yeah," he said with a shrug. "Turns out I've got a metaphorical open door in my head and that's where the nightmares are coming from."

"Not sure what I'm supposed to do about it so I've just been ignoring it and hoping for the best." His favorite way of dealing with problems.

"A metaphorical door? To what?"

Worry worry worry.
