Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

//Jono, right,// he agreed, giving a little nod of his head. He generally tried to at least give some sort of visual cue as he spoke, mostly because his voice really was just a disembodied head-sound connected to nobody, otherwise. //Just one of apparently more than I thought there would be who were mad enough to come back here to teach after getting our pretty little diploma and being allowed to leave. Not a single actually new face among the faculty right now, have you noticed?//

Cara had noticed a certain lack of boggling. "Disappointed you don't get to break in someone new and unsuspecting?"

//I'll probably manage to keep from crying myself to sleep at night over it,// Jono replied with a shrug. //Means I don't get to give the 'avoid small green things, brace yourself for bigger, meaner things trying to eat you on occasion' speech, though.//

"Don't let me stop you giving the speech," Cara said, crossing her arms and raising an eyebrow. "Though the 'meaner' part would be inaccurate."

Because foregoing a chance to boast was apparently just too much.

Hey, she'd survived being a student on the island. She'd earned the right to brag.

//Well, bigger and meaner than some, at least,// Jono amended. //There are some who can most certainly handle themselves when large, hungry things come scuttling through. Perhaps I'll just cut my speech down to asking if you have any questions about the students, or need any help settling in, that sort of thing?//

"If were talking about the students, how resilient do you think these ones are?"

No, bad Cara, no thinking about breaking students on the first day.

Jono felt that he was something of an expert on the subject, really, since he'd met some of them before anyone else on the faculty but Anakin, and he'd taught others for the past few semesters. He looked vaguely amused as he looked out over the crowd.

//The old ones went through nothing shy of hell last semester,// he noted. //They're tough, they'll last. The new ones... it's a difficult call. The ones I've talked to so far have varied between timid and utterly lost to 'saved an alternate dimension,' at least. We'll likely have a couple that survive the summer, I suppose.//

"Metaphorically speaking." Since unless they'd changed things since she graduated, they still weren't allowed to kill students. Not even the annoying ones.

//Metaphorically,// Jono agreed, //tempting as it is sometimes to just smack them upside the bloody heads, sometimes.//

"But that might knock some sense into them," Cara said. "Can't have that."

//Really, if some of the things that hit this place can't smack sense into them, we don't stand much of a chance,// Jono pointed out. //Now, I'm not saying that some of them are hopeless, but...//

Well, he thought it, from time to time.

"But some of them are hopeless." Cara and tact would never be the best of friends.

//Some of them are especially hopeless,// Jono agreed.

Tact was overrated, anyhow.

Careful, Jono, Cara might start to like you. "Should we take bets on who has the most hopeless?"

//I'd be up for that,// Jono chuckled. //We picking them out of the crowd, or going to wait until we actually have a chance to get to know some of them? I'd say we could probably go by which breaks down crying and tries to leave the island, first...//

He cared for and was protective of all of his students. That didn't mean he couldn't have a little harmless fun at their expense.

"Out of the crowd," Cara said. "I'm curious about your instincts."

Jono nodded thoughtfully, and then looked around the crowd for a moment, pointing at the girl with the ridiculously long hair.

//She's got a backbone hiding in there, but if we see a repeat of what went on last semester, she'll be one of the first to crack, I think. Too much, too fast, and she strikes me as a sheltered one.//

Cara nodded in agreement. "The one with the glasses." Sorry, Felicity. "She looks like she's from a place close enough to this one that the differences will creep up on her."

"Of course they'll both be better for it if they manage to get past the cracking." You got a fun perspective on undergoing mental trauma when you were a Mord'Sith.

//Oh, almost certainly,// agreed the former X-Man. //It probably won't actually kill you around here, but if it doesn't drive you bloody mad, it'll probably make you stronger.//

"Or it'll do both." Cara still had concerns about most of the island's residents.

//Or that,// Jono allowed. //Actually, now that you mention it, there is a fair bit of that. Though I suppose around here, a break with reality is almost the same thing as just accepting what goes on around the island as 'normal.'//

"I'm surprised we haven't had anyone snapping all the way and declaring themselves some kind of god."

No, she hadn't met Thor, why do you ask?

//At least, beyond the ones that actually are gods,// Jono mused. //Or as close to it as they get.//

Jono actually thought Thor was pretty okay.

That little brother of his, on the other hand...

"Wait, that's actually happened?" She wasn't sure if this was better or worse than 'the Creator' running off with a boy.

//Really, it can't be that surprising, luv,// Jono replied with a shrug of his shoulders. //Hell, from my world alone they've probably had four or five, over the years. Asgardians and Olympians, mostly, I think...//
