Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Out of the crowd," Cara said. "I'm curious about your instincts."

Jono nodded thoughtfully, and then looked around the crowd for a moment, pointing at the girl with the ridiculously long hair.

//She's got a backbone hiding in there, but if we see a repeat of what went on last semester, she'll be one of the first to crack, I think. Too much, too fast, and she strikes me as a sheltered one.//

[Sorry! Free comic book day turned into an adventure.]

Cara nodded in agreement. "The one with the glasses." Sorry, Felicity. "She looks like she's from a place close enough to this one that the differences will creep up on her."

"Of course they'll both be better for it if they manage to get past the cracking." You got a fun perspective on undergoing mental trauma when you were a Mord'Sith.

//Oh, almost certainly,// agreed the former X-Man. //It probably won't actually kill you around here, but if it doesn't drive you bloody mad, it'll probably make you stronger.//

"Or it'll do both." Cara still had concerns about most of the island's residents.

//Or that,// Jono allowed. //Actually, now that you mention it, there is a fair bit of that. Though I suppose around here, a break with reality is almost the same thing as just accepting what goes on around the island as 'normal.'//

"I'm surprised we haven't had anyone snapping all the way and declaring themselves some kind of god."

No, she hadn't met Thor, why do you ask?

//At least, beyond the ones that actually are gods,// Jono mused. //Or as close to it as they get.//

Jono actually thought Thor was pretty okay.

That little brother of his, on the other hand...

"Wait, that's actually happened?" She wasn't sure if this was better or worse than 'the Creator' running off with a boy.

//Really, it can't be that surprising, luv,// Jono replied with a shrug of his shoulders. //Hell, from my world alone they've probably had four or five, over the years. Asgardians and Olympians, mostly, I think...//

Thor, Loki, Hercules...

Cara's mythology was not your mythology, Jono. "Right."

That was a hint of a smirk, somewhere around the corners of his eyes. It wasn't really myth so much as fact, where he was from, but he could at least grasp that it wasn't the same everywhere.

//Of course, we might be running off different definitions of the word 'god,' as well. It seems to differ somewhat, from place to place.//

"We should be grateful the Keeper is unlikely to try enrolling any time soon." What with the trying to wipe out all life and everything.

//I'll take your word for that,// Jono decided. //Most of the mad gods that I've learned to be wary of have come to school here at one point or another, so I'm sorry I can't say the same.//

He was side-eyeing Loki again. Because Loki.

"You'd notice if they had," Cara assured him. "Mostly from all the death and the banelings."

//I'm not sure what a baneling is,// Jono noted, //but it has 'bane' right there in the name, so I'm going to just accept that it's probably unpleasant.//

Smart lad.

//Let's hope that it doesn't come to that, here, then. I'm certain the island has plenty of other nightmares to drag us through, anyway.//

"Like zombies, but worse." Boy had going to Caritas been fun that first time.

"I'm sure the island will find something suitably horrific to welcome the new kids." Don't sound so happy about that, Cara.

//And keep us from getting too bored? I suppose we'll see what the summer brings,// Jono agreed, looking out again at the new faces in the crowd. //With any luck, it'll be something we can put up a proper fight against, next time.//

Jono hadn't been a huge fan of, say, the Nothing.

While Cara had such fond memories of the Swamps of Sadness and having to remember all the things she usually did her best to repress.

Oh, wait, they weren't fond at all.

"I have plenty of things to keep me from getting bored." Things that were stabby and witch-shaped. "But you need a good fight to keep your edge."

//The island doesn't exactly march off to war. Or even really have much in the way of people to train with,// Jono noted. //I generally have to go elsewhere to keep that edge up. Some of the things that wander through here are bloody refreshing, with that in mind.//

"Clearly we should be hoping for more frequent invasions then." Cara, it wasn't nice to want other people inconvenienced to satisfy your need for violence.

//What better way to break in the new students, right?//

Jono, listen to Cara's narrative.

Because someone had to listen to it.

"It'll get them used to the place. You could even say it'd do them a service." Who had thought it'd be a good idea to let her teach?

Probably the same crazy person who agreed to hire any one of the school's teachers?

//It'd weed out the ones that can't handle it right away, at least. Let them know right up front just what they're in for.//

Clearly someone needed to look at their life and their choices.

"Make them more likely to listen to use when we warn them about other things." Everyone won!
