Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

//I'm not sure what a baneling is,// Jono noted, //but it has 'bane' right there in the name, so I'm going to just accept that it's probably unpleasant.//

//Let's hope that it doesn't come to that, here, then. I'm certain the island has plenty of other nightmares to drag us through, anyway.//

"Like zombies, but worse." Boy had going to Caritas been fun that first time.

"I'm sure the island will find something suitably horrific to welcome the new kids." Don't sound so happy about that, Cara.

//And keep us from getting too bored? I suppose we'll see what the summer brings,// Jono agreed, looking out again at the new faces in the crowd. //With any luck, it'll be something we can put up a proper fight against, next time.//

Jono hadn't been a huge fan of, say, the Nothing.

While Cara had such fond memories of the Swamps of Sadness and having to remember all the things she usually did her best to repress.

Oh, wait, they weren't fond at all.

"I have plenty of things to keep me from getting bored." Things that were stabby and witch-shaped. "But you need a good fight to keep your edge."

//The island doesn't exactly march off to war. Or even really have much in the way of people to train with,// Jono noted. //I generally have to go elsewhere to keep that edge up. Some of the things that wander through here are bloody refreshing, with that in mind.//

"Clearly we should be hoping for more frequent invasions then." Cara, it wasn't nice to want other people inconvenienced to satisfy your need for violence.

//What better way to break in the new students, right?//

Jono, listen to Cara's narrative.

Because someone had to listen to it.

"It'll get them used to the place. You could even say it'd do them a service." Who had thought it'd be a good idea to let her teach?

Probably the same crazy person who agreed to hire any one of the school's teachers?

//It'd weed out the ones that can't handle it right away, at least. Let them know right up front just what they're in for.//

Clearly someone needed to look at their life and their choices.

"Make them more likely to listen to use when we warn them about other things." Everyone won!

They needed to look at their life and their choices, and they needed to feel bad about themselves. Very bad.

//Of course, it isn't as though the students who have been around a while bother to listen, either...//

"Sounds like they might have hearing problems." Or they were just too stubborn for their own good.

Because Cara could totally judge people about that!

//That must be it. The entire lot of them have something th'matter with their ears.//

Honestly, Jono had spent a month without a head last semester, and he'd still been better at listening than some students around here when it was a matter of personal safety.

Ish.

Cara knew all about ignoring your personal safety. It was only alright when she did it.

"Someone really should do something about that."

//I vote we smack them soundly around the ears until they start working again, but I imagine the administration would have problems with that plan.//

Always spoiling his fun.

"There are worse ways to get someone to listen." Many of which Cara had been far too familiar with.

//There are,// Jono agreed, shrugging. //Trouble is, you have to get our bosses to listen to that point before they'll buy it, and boxing their ears in isn't the way to go about winning their favour.//

Don't give Cara ideas, Jono.

"We'll just have to appeal to the students' sense of reason." Because that would work.

//The first think to learn about students,// Jono noted, //is that it's difficult to find any that have such a thing as a sense of reason when it comes to things like self-preservation.//

That was kind of universal for all people on the island, granted.

"I'm sure I can find some way of getting through tot them." Mostly by making them more scared of her than anything else.

//Well, if you figure out the secret, please do let me know. They're usually pretty good, so long as they don't think you're telling them what to do, but the instant you suggest that they stop being idiots about something...//

Perhaps not calling them idiots in the first place would help.

But not calling them idiots would be dishonest!

"Maybe if we actually told them to throw themselves into the path of danger."

Jonothon shook his head.

//No, I'm pretty sure then they'd just argue later that we gave them permission. Anything that isn't explicitly us telling them to keep their noses out of it? Permission. I failed to send a message telling them not to come to class while there were zombies and dinosaurs and lord knows what else out there, and they took that to mean that they were supposed to show up.// He rolled his eyes. //I want a class on common bloody sense, is what I want. I will go into that classroom with a rolled up newspaper, ask people what they'd do in certain situations, and then beat them with it.//

"I don't know what the world's coming to that students would do that" said Miss Never-Done-Anything-of-the-Sort,-Really-She-Hadn't.

//The world, the whole bloody multiverse, high school students in general... who knows?//

Jono absolutely hadn't done the same, either. Honest.
