Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"'Want to be a hero?'" Cara said. "The name might be misleading." Since the people who'd take a class named like that were most in need of getting their heads straightened out.

"You?"

"Sounds like a way to get all the messed-up adrenaline junkies in one place," Jack noted. "Mine's called Teamwork for Jerks. Inspired by my life."

"I figure that even if they don't bother to take my advice." Which was highly sensible and effective, Richard. "They'll at least be aware that some people will use the hand you offer them as leverage to stab you."

"I would never have guessed you had issues there," Cara deadpanned. "You look like such a team player."

"I am," Jack returned, equally deadpan. "I'm the fucking queen of sweetness and light. Ask anybody."

"I'm sure their answers will be inspired purely by love and respect for you," Cara said. "As opposed to fear you might feed them their own body parts."

It looked like Cara had met a whole two new people she didn't want to punch in the face (well, not in a bad way at least), it was a Newbie Weekend miracle!

Jack widened her eyes. "Do I look like the type of person who would do that?" she asked. "I mean, I might threaten it once or twice, but that's just a basic skill for a teacher."

"I'd never suggest you've done anything of the sort," Cara, at least try to look somewhat innocent. "If you actually have to follow through on a threat something's gone wrong somwhere."

Not that Cara wouldn't follow through if she had to, she just very rarely did.

"Mmmm, depends," Jack said. "Not my fault if my promises sound like threats to other people. But with the kids? Yeah, if I have to follow up there's a problem."

"Not knowing the difference between the two does seem to be a far too common affliction," Cara agreed. "But do they tend to frown on violence as a teaching tool here."

Because the Mord'Sith idea of 'reasonable punishment' (which oddly enough only seemed reasonable to other Mord'Sith) had totally turned her into a meek and biddable individual.

"Yeah, but they aren't as strict as last place I worked," Jack sighed. "Back at Grissom they hated when I swore in front of the kids. Here I don't think they give a shit."

Cara raised her eyebrows. "If the only thing they have to worry about is foul language, they're doing well," she said. "Besides how else are they supposed to learn the most effective way to use it?"

"That's what I said," Jack nodded. "But Grissom's military. They wanted me to be all professional. Kids needed me, so..."

And as they both knew, soldiers never, ever swore. "So your duty came first."

"Seemed like the best idea at the time," Jack drawled. "What about you? Working on any special projects back home?"

Apart from her hopeless quest to convince someone to take his throne already?

"Nothing that's a matter of life or death," she said. "I was told to enjoy my summer because I'm only a portal away if needed. I hope Richard remembers that if he manages to get himself killed because I'm stuck in a lounge somewhere."
