Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It was at least two or three hours too early for Jack to break out the booze, so she was disappointingly sober when she got to the picnic and went to stand with the other teachers. Her arms were folded,and she was on alert for anybody with biotic potential -- or, if not that, anybody who looked like they wouldn't bore her.

Shirtless Cade gave her a wave and a smirk as he walked by.

Jack -- whose garment could be called a "shirt" only by charitable observers -- gave him a wolf whistle in return.

"Graduation suits you, Cade."

"Thanks," Cade said, grinning. "Gotta make those new kids feel welcome, right?"

"And distract them from whatever shitholes they crawled out of," Jack added. "I approve. And speaking of feeling welcome, I think I still owe you a beer."

"You do," Cade agreed, grinning. "Maybe two."

"Hey, let's not go crazy with the plans," Jack joked. "You up for a Caritas trip Tuesday or Thursday?"

"Sure," Cade said. "I'm TAing on Monday but other than that, I've got nothing going on. It's very freeing."

Cade with a lot of time on his hands can only be a good thing.

"My class is Fridays this term, and I'm free the rest of the time," Jack told him. "It's nice, huh? Especially now that the weather stopped sucking."

Cade nodded, grinning. "Lots of time to spend on the beach."

Most of the attention Cara was paying to her new fellow teachers was idle automatic threat assessment, but if she was checking Jack out as much sizing her up, well, she could still admire an interesting view.

Jack arched a brow at the blonde, who was an interesting view in several ways. "Were you looking for me?"

"No," Cara replied. "But I am looking at you."

She didn't really do coy, plus she wanted to see what the other woman's reaction would be.

Jack laughed. "Look all you like," she said. "Not sure we play for the same team, but no harm in using your eyes."

"Pity," Cara said, without that much regret since she was hardly free to play anyway. "You look like a woman who knows how to have fun."

"You're right on that one," Jack agreed. "You do, too."

She offered her hand. "Hey, I'm Jack. Are you teaching?"

Cara just grinned. It wasn't a particularly nice grin, but she figured Jack had a similar one of her own.

"Cara," she replied, taking the hand. "Over the summer."

The glint in Jack's eye came close to matching the glint in Cara's.

"Good," she answered. "You seem like the type who can put up with the kids here. Which subject?"

"'Want to be a hero?'" Cara said. "The name might be misleading." Since the people who'd take a class named like that were most in need of getting their heads straightened out.

"You?"

"Sounds like a way to get all the messed-up adrenaline junkies in one place," Jack noted. "Mine's called Teamwork for Jerks. Inspired by my life."

"I figure that even if they don't bother to take my advice." Which was highly sensible and effective, Richard. "They'll at least be aware that some people will use the hand you offer them as leverage to stab you."

"I would never have guessed you had issues there," Cara deadpanned. "You look like such a team player."

"I am," Jack returned, equally deadpan. "I'm the fucking queen of sweetness and light. Ask anybody."

"I'm sure their answers will be inspired purely by love and respect for you," Cara said. "As opposed to fear you might feed them their own body parts."

It looked like Cara had met a whole two new people she didn't want to punch in the face (well, not in a bad way at least), it was a Newbie Weekend miracle!

Jack widened her eyes. "Do I look like the type of person who would do that?" she asked. "I mean, I might threaten it once or twice, but that's just a basic skill for a teacher."

"I'd never suggest you've done anything of the sort," Cara, at least try to look somewhat innocent. "If you actually have to follow through on a threat something's gone wrong somwhere."

Not that Cara wouldn't follow through if she had to, she just very rarely did.
