Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!


[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

One of these days, someone was going to actually try to find out where Pinkie kept her party cannon.

They would probably instantly regret it.

Anyway, Pinkie gleefully whipped a blue cannon at least as big as she was out of seemingly nowhere, aimed it at the sky, and set it off with a little *squee* of delight, creating a rain of confetti -- and one party hat, which drifted down somehow perfectly aimed to land squarely on Kate's head.

Well. That was definitely something.

"Wow," Kate said, once the improbable hat had landed on her head. (And she totally hadn't yelped. Twice. First at the cannon's appearance and then at the rain of confetti. There was something wrong with your ears, clearly.) "That... has to be the most Fandom welcome anyone has ever gotten."

Kate wasn't sure she'd meant it as a compliment but hey, if it sounded like that, at least she'd been polite by accident?

"Also, um, in case that didn't give it away, I used to go to school here. Like a few years back."

"You did seem pretty familiar with things," Pinkie said. "You hardly blinked at all when most people do faces like this." Her jaw dropped all the way to the ground and her eyes bugged out. Then she went back to smiling pleasantly. "Welcome back, then. That's it's own special kind of welcome!"

Kate nodded. "Yeah, I did..."

She ended up gesturing at Pinkie's face, for want of a better description.

"... that, already, five years ago. But, thanks! It's pretty new, being on this side of things." To say the least. And then something occurred to her. "So, wait, you're a teacher too?"

"Yuppers! I teach about friendship. And sometimes baking. Or art. Or teamwork! This summer, I'm teaching a games class. What are you teaching?"

And that was the first time she said that today without feeling ridiculous. So, congrats, Pinkie, for at least making Kate feel somewhat normal.

"That sounds super neat!" Pinkie said. Admittedly, she would have said that whatever Kate said she was teaching, but she'd've meant it no matter what, too. "You must be extraspecial good at being awesome, then."

"I'm pretty good," Kate replied. Not the kind of cheerfully smug boasting she liked to usually do, but still okay. "I mean, I made it through to graduation from Fandom High, and still dared to come back to try my hand at teaching so I'd say I'm pretty awesome, yeah."
