Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Once people got through their introductions and initial brain breaking, some of them would surely want to sit down. Luckily, there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn, some in the shade, some out in the open, some close to the buffet, and some in as much of a shadowy corner as one could get in an outdoor space with no actual walls. It was all part of the Fandom experience, really.

Eat, drink, chat - just don't do anything dirty on the tables. They have to get used again in the spring, you know.

Karla was there with a bright smile for the newbies. but she couldn't help but look around for familiar faces that were no longer on the island.

It was a wistful kind of bright smile, really. Fortunately, there was always a ton of food to cheer her up.

Kenzi was there, on a picnic table, with a plate of food.

She also had about a dozen bright canisters labeled "GREMLIN-B-GONE" and a little sign that said, "Protect yourself from hallucinations, humiliation, and vermin! Two dollars to keep your dorm room safe!"

See how much she cared about the newbies?

Now to find someplace to sit down and actually attack eat all this food while he scoped out the new kids.

So he may have rationalised going to the dance as practice for the welcome picnic, but truth be told, Toby had fully been expecting CYS to pull the plug on his little adventure and send him packing long before it happened.

Instead, according to Ray, they'd been more than happy to leave him alone, since he did want to be here. Unlike, obviously, his last school.

So, yeah, here he was, availing himself of the free food and being thankful that at least it wasn't raining this time.

Free food? Heck yeah, Alex was here, he was a growing boy. Or at least he hoped to grow. You know. Sometime. Anyway, he had a plateful of food and was smiling cheerfully.

If you found him a little creepy that was totally not his fault.

Bobby had spent way too much of the past term buried in setting up a Get Out The Vote (in 2006) project for his mom. It was easier to never go out and talk to people now that he didn't have a roommate, and while Bobby didn't really mind, Jack had made Mom promise not to bug him about it now that school was starting again. Jack had weird ideas about Bobby needing a 'real' social life.

But he was here now and looking around for people to talk to and new students to introduce himself to. He was quite an old hand by now! which mostly meant that he knew where on the tables the best food was.

Petra happily helped herself to some food, avoiding any seafood or coconut options because seriously, she'd had enough of that to last her a lifetime. She was happily munching away and doing her best to look approachable and friendly, as opposed to nervous about being a new kid or like she was increasingly sure she'd fallen into crazytown. All of the above were kind of true.

It felt like a century since Ender had last been here. It felt whimsical - but then, he reminded himself, Fandom always had. He took a spot in the grass to sprawl on instead of his old seat and watched, keeping an eye out for Peter in the process.

Mostly, he let his thoughts wander off.

Of course Peter made it down to the picnic. He had to scope out the new batch of newbies, see if there was anyone worth knowing. He sat down in the area he considered the beating heart of the picnic, poking through the food and keeping an eye out.

The autumn picnic always had a certain air of melancholy to it, Firekeeper thought, with the departure of so many still fresh. Of course, this particular welcome picnic also brought with it the possibility that their roommate may return, something neither would've believed back at the beginning of summer. So here they were, in a rather good mood despite Tahiri's departure yesterday.

Besides which, it was rare that the wolves would miss an opportunity to give the new students a good scare. Funny how a large wolf could do just that.

Lex wasn't particularly hungry at the moment, even if some of the cakes looked tempting, so his plate was empty. He did have a bottle of water though.

Dolf was sitting by the food tables with his giant Saint Bernard. So far, he wasn't actually managing to eat too much without getting begged out of the majority of whatever he was eating.

Nana was a harsh mistress.

Oh, like Pinkie would ever miss a party. She was here with bells on (literally! they were her new party bells!), drooling over the snacks table (not literally! though she was licking up the occasional hors d'oeuvres), and looking around for any fun new ponies to meet.

Sam was there, standing by the snack table, eating fried chicken and having a glorious time.

She'd get around to the new people eventually. This was quality fried meat she was enjoying, right here.

Alistair would like to claim he was keeping an eye on the picnic to help wayward students and all that, but honestly, he was hungry.

And so he had the biggest mountain of food on his plate and he was digging through it at an alarming rate.

Hanging out at a table, Caroline (http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqiofcoh5G1qmz5hpo2_500.jpg) was amusing herself by making her own assumptions based off of the look of the newbies (and oldbies if she was being honest) between bouts of boredly staring at her sandal-clad feet (http://couture.zappos.com/images/z/1/3/8/1383130-p-DETAILED.jpg) and considering if she couldn't have done a better polish job on her sparkly black toenails. Perfection was so hard to attain and yet she was tempted to give up her people watching to go fix it.

Right. Once more into the fray, and without Kennedy or a reserves table to hide behind this time. Tara squared her shoulders and prepared herself, hoping no one she didn't feel like talking to would be too interested in where she'd gone all summer.

The fall welcome picnic was the most important chance Quinn would get to make an impression on the masses before people started voting on things like Homecoming Queen and class president. She would have been there and looking great even if she hadn't already been in a good mood. As it happened, she was cheerful to start with, so her smile was almost entirely genuine.

Tyrion sighed with irritation at the banquet tables. No serving wenches to be found, and the platters were set at a perfect height for him to bring an appalling medley down on himself if he filled his own plate. He gingerly took a bun from the edge of one plate and gnawed at it.

Luke wasn't really in the mood for the whole picnic thing, but he figured it'd be good for him if he stopped moping in his room. The bruises and marks from his fight with Percy were all gone, but his own worry was making him look more sickly by the day.

He was trying not to focus on that too much and instead tried to pay attention to the new people. Figured he should probably keep Kate updated on any new weirdos.

This was as close as Fandom got to the first official day of school like in a normal school. Jack was around and munching on sandwich. When anyone walked by and made eye contact, he gave a friendly smile and nod that suggested a 'hey, how's it going?' greeting.

Well Cassel had survived his first semester, and was celebrating that by watching the new batch of new kids look nervous and confused. It was actually quite entertaining.

Natalie was just... getting a feel for the place. She wasn't actively mingling much, deciding rather to drift through the crowd with a drink in hand, watching people, listening to snippets of conversation.

So far, it wasn't horrible.
