Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Once people got through their introductions and initial brain breaking, some of them would surely want to sit down. Luckily, there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn, some in the shade, some out in the open, some close to the buffet, and some in as much of a shadowy corner as one could get in an outdoor space with no actual walls. It was all part of the Fandom experience, really.

"I think that's extremely unlikely," Petra said wryly. Not least because she was already planning her escape. It involved Mary Lou's pirates and running like hell.

Personally, Toby thought anyone whose escape plan seriously involved pirates really had very little room to talk.

What? There were a lot of people. Keeping them out of his head was way too much effort at this point.

But he hadn't dealt well at all with the sudden bombardment of "magic/superheroes/all that other sort of crap is real" himself, so. "I just hope you're not writing the place off yet," he said instead.

They were reality show pirates! Not real ones! Not that Petra knew to tell him that. Or even think it.

"I keep trying not to, and then I keep circling back around to 'you accidentally sent yourself to an asylum, Petra, way to go.' Oh, uh. No offense?"

Which was why Toby was going to go right on and assume she meant real pirates. Like the one who ran the radio station. Or something.

"None taken," Toby said with an easy shrug. "Though I think asylums tend to be a little more supervision-heavy."

"Yeah, I was wondering where the doctors or whatever are," she admitted. "It's the real flaw in my theory."

"Plus, they let us have like, forks and knives and stuff," Toby pointed to the buffet table. If they were still in creepy monochrome world, that might have helped settle some of the disbelief, but... again, with the remembering thinking everything was just an elaborate hallucination on his first few days too. "And I'm Toby," he offered with a grin, since she'd offered her name already.

"That's true," Petra said, eyeing the buffet table. "And everyone has normal clothes--well, mostly normal clothes--instead of scrubs or something. It's nice to meet you, Toby. I hope?"

Toby's were definitely normal, in any case, if a little on the worn-out looking side.

"Totally nice," Toby assured her. "Have you met up with your big sibling or your roommate yet?" he checked.

"Not my big sibling, but I met my roommate," Petra confirmed. "Her name is...um. I have trouble saying it. Day-nair-ees? I think that's right? She's, uh. Okay, I know I was hallucinating but she had little, like, dragons?"

"Maybe they're just some obscure kind of lizard?" ... They were probably dragons.

"Maybe!" she said hopefully. "They were. They had wings. But the giant snakes on the island had neck frills, so surely some other lizards from...somewhere could have wings, right?"

First pirates, and now giant snakes? It seemed to Toby like Petra's own reality had been pretty crazy in its own right. "Giant snakes," he repeated a little dubiously.

"One tried to eat Sosie. Oh. Sosie was Miss Illinois. But then she escaped and it blew up."

"...Are you sure you didn't escape from an insane asylum?" Toby asked, in a tone that made it clear he was joking.

Mostly.

"No, I escaped from a deserted island where an evil corporation was trying to kill me. It's totally different," Petra told him, completely matter-of-fact and sounding sort of like 'duh.'

"Okaaaaaay," Toby said, just a little dubiously. "You're not just messing with me, are you?" He doubted it; she definitely believed what she was telling him.

"No, I'm not messing with you, this all totally happened," Petra told him. "And I'm not the crazy one, that was Taylor."

"I can see why you'd want to come to Fandom," Toby deadpanned. "Clearly you needed the change of pace." Yeah, as if she'd find it here.

"I came to Fandom because..." the protesters and autograph seekers outside my house were ruining my family's life, she thought. "Yeah, change of pace," she said. "That's it."

...Autograph seekers? He gave Petra a considering look, trying to figure out what that was about. "Do I know you from somewhere?" he tried.

"The news?" Petra asked. Then she sighed and admitted, "Either that or, were you a big Boyz Will B Boyz fan?"

Okay, so Toby had no idea what Boyz Will B Boyz was. He figured he could outright lie and claim he was a fan of whatever-it-was, or... sidestep that part of her statement entirely. "I don't watch the news much," he admitted.

So it was the first one. "But you're not a thirteen-year-old girl!"

"Really not, no." Toby raised an eyebrow at her. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"Most of our fans were thirteen-year-old girls?" Of course, Sinjin hadn't been, but he was an outlier in a lot of ways. Like being totally fine with his girlfriend having a penis. Why were they on a break again? Oh, right: school. Which might have turned out to be an asylum...

And yes. She did just think all of that.
