Sex Ed, Wednesday, Period 2, Class #3

Once everyone was seated, Edward addressed the class. "I know that some questions you have may be difficult to ask in person. For that reason, we now have a question box." He gestured at a wooden suggestion box sitting on a side table. "If you have a question, drop it in there and I will address it during the next class. And no, you do not have to sign your name. Also, Chuck, I'd like to talk to you after class."

"Today we are discussing Gender, Identity and Sexuality," Edward said. "We will be spending the majority of this semester learning about healthy behavior, but it is important we discuss abnormalities so you can recognize them when you see them." He discussed sex chromosomal abnormalities and then launched into a lecture about homosexuality, including what causes it and ways it can be cured. He also explained how dangerous homosexuality can be, and how friends and loved ones must be encouraged to choose heterosexuality for their own safety.

"For today's discussion, let's talk about choice. Write down at least three things that you choose to be and at least three things that you are and cannot be changed. Then share these with your group. Do you agree with everyone's list?"

"For example, Kevin has blond hair. Would you say that Kevin is blond or that he chooses to be blond?"

Claire was turning purpler and purpler from anger. Yeah, her brother David had chosen to be gay, that's why he was past 30 before he came out. Clearly.

She imagined slowly throttling her teacher.

It took Kevin a while a bit to catch on to what the lecture was about, and then he got very angry.

He was so sick of people telling him he was abnormal.

Gwen got through the lecture by imagining Edward locked in a room with John Hart.

A very small room, maybe even a broom-closet.

It was almost soothing.

It was kind of ironic how Cal, for all his mortification about what might be brought up in this particular class, couldn't hear what was being said for the pounding of his heart drowning out any other sound in his ears. If he could, he would have realized his disorder wasn't even brought up. But the tone of discouragement and perhaps (to a panicked mind) contempt still made it through and left Cal hunched over his desk a little, hand covering his face, and thought blissfully back to the times when they just went ahead and pretended that everyone had perfectly normally working nether bits.

And maybe a cautious glance or two toward a certain blonde to try to read her face in response to this mention of abnormalities. The paranoia had completely shut everyone else, so if anyone talked to him after class, he might be surprised to find out that homosexuality was even discussed.

Jenny stared at Edward, completely stunned. This was all some sort of horrible joke and he was going to say 'psych' at any moment, wasn't he?

As she realized he really wasn't, she began to daydream about introducing him to the Midnighter.

Claire is going home this weekend even though she doesn't know it yet, but I would happily accept a detention for the weekend after if she earns it. (Which she may. This topic is a bit of a hot button for her.)
