Once everyone was seated, Edward addressed the class. "I know that some questions you have may be difficult to ask in person. For that reason, we now have a question box." He gestured at a wooden suggestion box sitting on a side table. "If you have a question, drop it in there and I will address it during the next class. And no, you do not have to sign your name. Also, Chuck, I'd like to talk to you after class."

"Today we are discussing Gender, Identity and Sexuality," Edward said. "We will be spending the majority of this semester learning about healthy behavior, but it is important we discuss abnormalities so you can recognize them when you see them." He discussed sex chromosomal abnormalities and then launched into a lecture about homosexuality, including what causes it and ways it can be cured. He also explained how dangerous homosexuality can be, and how friends and loved ones must be encouraged to choose heterosexuality for their own safety.

"For today's discussion, let's talk about choice. Write down at least three things that you choose to be and at least three things that you are and cannot be changed. Then share these with your group. Do you agree with everyone's list?"

"For example, Kevin has blond hair. Would you say that Kevin is blond or that he chooses to be blond?"

He's very open-minded.

Claire made a beeline for the teacher after class. "Hey. I totally disagree with what you said, and I think it's messed up you're telling it to kids."

Edward took a deep breath. He didn't need the air, but it gave him a moment to remember that he was the teacher here. "I'm sorry if you don't approve, Claire, but what I've discussed today is backed by scientific research. Perhaps you might try keeping an open mind?"

"I'm sorry you don't approve of my brother," Claire returned heatedly. "I'm sorry this school lets small-minded throwback freaks teach."

"Who did the research, Jerry Falwell?"

"That's a detention, Claire. And I will not continue this discussion," Edward said.

"You can't give people detention just for not buying your bullshit," Claire argued.

"You are welcome to share your personal opinions, but name-calling and disrespect will not be allowed in this classroom," Edward said.

Even Claire had to acknowledge that "small-minded throwback freak" probably counted as both name-calling and disrespect.

Whatever. It was for David.

"Fine," she grumbled. "I'm talking to Principal Winchester."

"I'm sure she'll be delighted to hear from you."

Claire didn't have a comeback. She rolled her eyes again for good measure, swiveled on her heel, and stomped off.

Hopefully the gallery opening would help redeem this waste of a day.

Chuck stuck around after class to see what Mr. Cullen wanted. He wasn't looking too happy about it.

"Chuck," Edward said. "I know how tempting physical desires can be, especially at your age. But indulging in promiscuity can be dangerous as well as immoral." He handed Chuck a pamphlet (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=980798&event=1003ACC|30260|1003#curr). "I'd like you to read this and really think about it."

Chuck looked down at the pamphlet and smirked. "I'm just curious; why do you think I'm promiscuous?"

"A friend of yours spoke to me, out of concern for your safety and well-being," Edward said.

"Ah, of course," Chuck said, shaking his head. Blair. He should have known. "With all due respect, Mr. Cullen, I may be an immoral person but it sure as hell isn't because I have sex. In fact, it's one of the ways I give back to society. Haven't had a dissatisfied partner yet."

If they were dissatisfied, well, Chuck was usually out the door before they could complain.

"Is that so? Well then, Chuck Bass, I have a proposal for you," Edward said, leaning forward slightly. "On November 5th, we begin the abstinence portion of this class. How would you like to present an alternative viewpoint?"

"I'd be glad to," Chuck said, his smirk getting wider. He most likely would have slept with most of the girls in the class by then. "I hope you won't get mad when the class sides with me."

"Everyone's entitled to their own opinion," Edward smiled. "And you will, of course, have at least one of your prior sexual partners there to testify on how you've given back to society."

"Excuse me, sir," Jenny said politely, but she had a look in her eye that had been known to make heads of state whimper. "I just have a few questions."

"How can I help you, Jenny?"

"Well, my first would be about your opinion of bi- and omnisexuals."

Yes. She did just say omni.

"You see, my first husband was an alien," she said cheerfully. "A male alien, but the terminology is so fuzzy when it comes to marrying outside one's species."

"That's one reason why miscegenation is generally a bad idea," Edward said. "And people who identify as 'bisexual' or using similar terms have the same choices anyone does."

Jenny blinked a few times, registered that yes, he really had just said 'miscegenation,' and said simply, "Wow. Okay. Um. I'm just curious about your claim that research supports your opinions. What research would that be? Is it in peer-reviewed journals? I want to do some more reading, you understand." So she could have a good laugh.

"Sure," Edward said. "Come by my office tomorrow and I'll have a reading list ready for you."

Ew, she had to come by his office? "I'll be sure to do that."
