Once everyone was seated, Edward addressed the class. "I know that some questions you have may be difficult to ask in person. For that reason, we now have a question box." He gestured at a wooden suggestion box sitting on a side table. "If you have a question, drop it in there and I will address it during the next class. And no, you do not have to sign your name. Also, Chuck, I'd like to talk to you after class."

"Today we are discussing Gender, Identity and Sexuality," Edward said. "We will be spending the majority of this semester learning about healthy behavior, but it is important we discuss abnormalities so you can recognize them when you see them." He discussed sex chromosomal abnormalities and then launched into a lecture about homosexuality, including what causes it and ways it can be cured. He also explained how dangerous homosexuality can be, and how friends and loved ones must be encouraged to choose heterosexuality for their own safety.

"For today's discussion, let's talk about choice. Write down at least three things that you choose to be and at least three things that you are and cannot be changed. Then share these with your group. Do you agree with everyone's list?"

"For example, Kevin has blond hair. Would you say that Kevin is blond or that he chooses to be blond?"

"Hey," Amber said as she joined her group.

"Hey," Joan said. "I'm Joan."

"I'm Amber," she said. "Nice to meet you."

"You too," Joan said with a smile. "So, uh... this is possibly the weirdest assignment I've ever had to do."

Including the ones from God. Which was saying something.

"Yah, it's not too bad," she said, glancing down at her notebook where she'd written down what she needed to. "This class is a bit odd, I'll give it that. Did you write down anything yet for discussion?"

"No, because I'm not sure how to break these things down," Joan admitted.

"Want me to go first?" 'Cause Amber was totally easy like that, and her answers were, uh, pretty simple.

"Sure."

"Alright," she looked down at her notebook. "Three things I choose to be are: a tap dancer, a girlfriend," she paused, grinned wide, "and a good daughter who doesn't judge her ma for being a chain-smoking alcoholic."

Wow, that was... huh.

"You tap dance? That's cool."

"Mhm, favorite thing to do," she replied. "Just don't get to do it often enough. And it's not like I'm in competition anymore... so."

She shrugged and read the rest of her assignment. "Things that I am: blonde, blue eyed, kind of thin." And so it wasn't that great of a list, Amber wasn't too thinky right now; she had other stuff on her mind.

"Don't you think you choose to be blonde?" Joan asked. "I mean, that might be your natural color, but you can always dye your hair, right?"

"I can, yah," she replied thoughtfully. "But I didn't choose to be born with this hair color."

Joan nodded. "Yeah, I get that. But it's something that you have the ability to change."

"But what if the invention of hair dye was never made?"

"You could shave your head and choose to be bald."

Amber laughed. "I hope that never happens."
