Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of moddable summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

Emma had been prepared to get the hell out of there as soon as the shuttle emptied, but there was a picnic and they hadn't seemed to have realised she wasn't supposed to be here yet, so now she was standing over here, complete with a nametag.

What a crazy coincidence! Evan just so happened to have a nametag, too, and he'd been informed of a little sibling that he was supposed to meet today, so he had been keeping an eye open for an Emma ever since the shuttle had arrived. He was smiling warmly as he walked up to her, pleased that hse hadn't been all that difficult to find.

"Hi! Emma, right?" He gave her a little wave hello. "Welcome to the island! I'm Evan, you might have seen my name next to yours on the sibling list already?"

Maybe! Maybe not! These new student days were always full of surprises.

Emma hadn't looked at the sibling list at all, since she wasn't meant to be here. Let alone have a new 'sibling' who was some variation on tiny goth.

"That's what's on the name tag, but, no, didn't really notice."

He was the tiniest goth you were ever going to meet, Emma. And he was going to tiny goth at you until you were feeling comfortable around here, if you'd let him.

"Oh." He blinked, and then gave her a sheepish little smile and a shrug of his shoulders. "Well... the school assigns the new students to people who have been around for a while, so that we can show you guys around and help you settle in more easily," he explained. "This place can be pretty overwhelming, so it's actually a surprisingly useful setup, you know?"

Well, since Mira was more or less dressed head to toe in leather, she wasn't keen on putting a sticky nametag with who knows what kind of adhesive on her anywhere. And even if she took her jacket off (which was unacceptable, even with this heat), it wasn't like her shirt had a ton of room for a nametag.

So sorry, big sibling Alec, but if you wanted to figure out which new person was yours, you were just going to have to use the process of elimination. Or guess. Or let her hunt you down. Any of the three would work.

Sigh.

Alec (whose nametag was perfectly visible, thanks) had done a few laps around the picnic area in search of an unfamiliar person with a nametag saying Mira, and while the latter was proving difficult to find, there were more than a few of the former. So, annoyed to have to be doing this, he continued wandering around, swinging his arms and trying to make eye contact with any new people that weren't already talking to big siblings of their own.

He guessed he could just call her name, but this passive approach seemed so much more likely to yield rewards.

"Looking for someone?" Mira asked. This guy was either Alec or somebody who really enjoyed wandering around. Wait, no, he was annoyed. Somebody who wandered around even though it annoyed him.

It was probably Alec.

"Yeah. Mira." Her deductive skills were pretty good. Though Alec usually looked annoyed. There was a good chance that it was part of his face by now. So it was a good thing she didn't know that or she might have had a harder time with this. "Any chance that's you?"

Okay, "Mordin" was kind of a weird name but anybody that used the nickname Stiles to cover up the horror of their own name had no room to judge. He had a name tag on his flannel (no shirtlessness for him, thank you) and was doing his best to read everybody else's tags to see if he could find his new little sibling.

One shot through a mass relay, one trip through a portal, and a ride in a primitive wheeled vehicle and Mordin was finally in Fandom. He had memorized the markings that made up the name of his 'Big Sibling', and after a few moments letting the unfamiliar, curious chatter of the picnic wash over him, he turned on his translator and approached the human labeled with his Big Sibling's name.

"Hello." He spoke this word in English, slightly mispronounced. It was one of the few he had already learned.

"Hel--oh my god." Well at least Stiles didn't jump and scream like he usually did when something surprised him. Somebody like Mordin called for a quiet kind of shock, apparently. "Um, Mordin?"

"Yes. Mordin Solus." Time to test the limits of a new translation program. Well, if it was functional enough to make peace during the Relay 314 incident, it should be functional enough to have a conversation.

'Flick,' huh? Sparkle raised an eyebrow at his sibling assignment, smirking a little bit as he smoothed out his nametag over his chest. Yeah, he'd obviously heard weirder names than 'Flick.' Now the question was, did Flick know anyone half as crazy as Sparkle?

... Sparkle, with his raccoon eyes and his freshly blonde spiked hair, who had stepped up onto the nearest picnic table and who was hollering out into the crowd?

"Flick!? I'm lookin' for a guy named Flick over here! Anyone see him? Or her, whatever kind of name that is!"

Someone was shouting his name. Not really what he'd expected and Flick couldn't help but be immediately wary. His father had barely told him anything about this place and then shoved a brochure at him like that would provide all the answers.

He thought about ignoring the guy that was shouting for him but decided against it when he figured maybe the guy could answer some questions.

Or maybe he'd have something decent on him that Flick could steal. Because that'd be a great way to welcome himself to this place.

"I'm Flick," he said mildly, raising an eyebrow at the look of the guy. "You rang?"

Ha, like Sparkle had anything decent to his name. There was some loose change in his pocket, and his backpack was slung over his shoulder, empty so that he could stash away some food from the tables for later. That was about it.

"Ah, so you are a guy." He shot Flick a grin, hopping down onto the bench, and then down again so that he had both feet planted on the ground. "You're also new, which is why I'm here. Name's Sparkle, I'm supposed to be playing 'big brother' for you while you settle in around the island. I think mostly that means I tell you who not to piss off, and then I encourage you to come up with ways to piss 'em off anyway."

Cordelia had skipped the shuttle, because please. Besides, once she saw the castle, which she thought was pretty cool and very European, she thought this was a much better first impression to get.

Of course, now there was the lameness of having a "big sibling," but all schools had to have their weird traditions, right? She didn't put her nametag on, because it didn't go with this outfit, but she was carrying it in her hand, because that was helpful. Now, who looked like an Anna?

Anna didn't know if she looked like an Anna or not, but here she was, actually wearing her nametag and peering around at everyone she didn't recognize to see if she could locate a 'Cordelia.' "Cordelia Chase?" she asked in a sort of general manner. "Has anyone seen Cordelia Chase?"

"That's me," Cordelia said, waving her nametag in her hand. "So you're my big sibling?"

Well her look was very retro...

It wasn't Sia's first time doing this, so she was relatively sure she get through this without scarring her new little sibling. While she hated the nametag, she wrote "Marasiah" on it, with "(Sia)" under it since she'd learned by now, and kept an eye out for Mavis.

She'd probably have to peer a little harder by the time dusk fell and Mavis finally made it out of her father's hotel room and down to the picnic, but at least one of them had exceptionally good night-vision, so there was that.

She also had a Hi My Name Is MAVIS DRACULA tag, because might as well get the Yeah, yeah, that Dracula, don't worry, his growl is worse than his bite thing over with right at the beginning, and nametags in general, eh. With the number of conventions she'd helped her dad host, she'd long ago gotten over feeling dorky about them, even if he wouldn't be caught undead wearing one.

"Mar-ah-see-ah?" she pronounced carefully but correctly, before getting to the helpful parenthetical. "Wow, I love your hair! My aunt has a streak just like that." Except for the part where she could literally hide a beehive inside her beehive. "Are you a Stein too?"

Victor had a neatly-lettered nametag firmly attached to his shirt as he scoped out the newbies. Emily seemed to have adjusted okay; he hoped Katherine Li, whoever she was, would be able to say the same.

Kathy had found her nametag and put it on, then looked around to spot a Victor. The idea of having someone to show her the ropes was a nice one. From what she'd seen of the island and the school (a castle?!), knowing there was someone there to help her out was comforting.

Now she just had to hope that he'd volunteered to be helpful and not to be a brat to the new kids.

"Hi, Victor?" she said when she spotted the nametag. "I think you're looking for me?"
