Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of ~~moddable~~ summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

"Good guess. I have, like, study material floating around somewhere. A classmate shoved it at me, and I guess I'm supposed to learn it? But the closest you'll catch me to playing like teacher's pet is the TA job I have in Wiggin's class this term. Which is just different, trust me."

A class on talking to people? Yeah, a motormouth like Sparkle would do great as TA, there.

Flick actually did wonder if there was something like a Dux here, some person who ruled the school with a slippery smile and ulterior motives. He automatically started putting Sparkle in a category (Android but slipping towards Ghost because of the air of insubordination he had about him) and stopped himself when he realized it.

He wasn't at Mandel anymore and he needed to stop thinking he was. It was going to be like some beacon for Lucian Mandel if he kept doing that.

"Good to know," he said, giving Sparkle a nod. "I think I've got my class schedule somewhere but I haven't really looked at it. No one gave me a job like that. Probably for the best. I'm not very helpful."

"See, that's what I keep telling people, and then they keep giving me responsibilities. I have no idea what gives with that."

Seriously. Two jobs in town that he hadn't technically asked for and a TA position, and Sparkle was still baffled by this.

"They like to screw with people's heads around here," Sparks added, stuffing his hands into his pockets. "You show up and you think you know how the world works, and they do their damnedest to take it apart and make you see it all different, and when the weird shit starts happening, eventually you don't even blink."

"Desensitization?" Sounded like what Sparkle was describing. Flick was pretty sure whatever happened on this island wasn't going to really shock him.

He was going to be proven wrong the first time something weird happened to be him but he'd seen a lot already. He'd been pretty much scabbed over to being affected.

"Should I find religion and kiss my ass goodbye?"

Hey, that was a joke! Apparently, he could still make those.

It was good to know! Sparkle gave Flick a grin when he did.

"Religion can't save you here," he answered, half-jokingly. "First, you'd have to actually pick a god. And then you'd have to, like, survive his class. I hear Thor is feeding people in his all summer."

"I don't think any religion would have me anyway," Flick replied with a one shouldered shrug. "And I don't think I want any part of them either. I do better on my own."

Or with Jude around but that wasn't an option anymore.

"And there is nothing the matter with that, either," Sparkle replied. "Really, it's probably safer to go it solo around here half the time anyhow. The other half..." He gave his shoulders a shrug. "Just trust me, you don't want to stay solo around this place for too long. You think you can handle 'fucking insane,' but this island pushes everybody's limits. Honestly, I think Fandom thinks it's some kind of game."

"Yeah, but I'm not solo, am I? This place comes with a built in buddy system."

Well, Sparkle was there and while he figured this could be a whole repeat of the Gwendolyn thing, he was willing to take a chance. Blend in and all.

So, I'm set."

Sparkle gave Flick a crooked grin at that, reaching out with one hand and aiming to give the guy a clap on the shoulder.

"About as set as you're going to get, at least. There anything you want to know about this place, now that you're here? Where to eat, which bar doesn't card, anything like that?"

Flick probably should have asked where he could get some clothes or toiletries or anything but he didn't. He shook his head.

Not great at asking for help, this one. Hadn't served him well in the past so he tended to not do it. Easy enough.

"I think you've pretty much covered the basics of island life 101," Flick said, glancing around. "It'll be trial by fire but I'm sure I'll adjust pretty quickly."

Honestly, he hoped he wouldn't be here that long to have to adjust but he was at the mercy of his father now.

"Yeah, well, if you change your mind between now and then, I work at the clothing store in town tomorrow. Come on in, you get the 'little brother' discount because you're not half as obnoxious as my other little sibling was."

... It was not difficult to be less obnoxious than Jackson, granted.

"Or I'm in my room now and then. In 209. Fridays I work at Dite's. Leave a note or just hit up my voicemail or whatever if you can't find me. It usually works."

"Thanks," Flick said, giving Sparkle a nod. "Appreciate the hospitality. I'll remember all that."

He tapped the side of his head to show that all that was now safely stored in his head. He'd remember even if he didn't know if he'd ever take advantage. It was good to know, anyway.

"And I'm in...508," he finally recalled. "I'm sure I'll end up there eventually."

"Take your time," Sparkle replied, smirking. "There's plenty of food, even some people wandering around this place that don't completely suck. Have a good first day on the island, man. It's not like the peace and calm ever really lasts around here, after all."

That was some serious foreshadowing right there. Flick guessed the wary feeling wasn't going to go away. And he guessed he probably wouldn't sleep either.

Hopefully that didn't mean Jude would stay away. He'd have to leave a window open.

"Thanks," he said and meant it sincerely. "I'll do my best. Hopefully, nothing goes wrong on my first day. That'd suck."

And he had enough suck to go around right now.

"First days are usually pretty low-key," Sparkle offered. "Give it like a week, and someone you know will turn into a dog or something. That'll be your real welcome to the island."

And the smirk on his face didn't really betray one way or the other whether he was teasing, or telling the truth. It was fun to keep the new people guessing.

Interesting.

"Well, I never had a dog," Flick said with a small snicker. Even if was strange, Flick would take something strange and laughable over the alternative.

"Maybe I'll play a game of fetch with the unfortunate victim, get them exercise."

And if he turned into the dog, well, he'd cross that bridge when he came to it.

"Trust me, they'll appreciate it. Being a dog is freaking boring if nobody wants to play with you. You have to make your own fun. Dig up the lawn, chase the gremlins, shit in places you really have no business doing your business..."

Sparkle was indeed the voice of experience.

"Fetch beats sleeping all day, waiting for whoever's taking care of you until you get your thumbs back to get home from class."

"Sounds like you speak from experience."

Which meant his big sibling had been a dog. His father had definitely not researched this place which made Flick like it a little bit more.

"Which means I'm learning about the weird, freaky stuff from an expert. It's kind of comforting."

"I'm only an expert because I've been here for like a year and some change, now," Sparkle replied, shrugging. "That's why they have this sibling thing, you know? Most people hear 'turned into a dog' and they think I'm on drugs or something."

Which, well, he occasionally was. But that didn't change the fact that he'd been the most annoying corgi the island had ever seen.

"Would've been some pretty good drugs if you were thinking you were a dog," Flick quipped with a small grin. "If I was into that sort of thing, I'd ask you to share but I should probably stick to Tylenol when it comes to drugs. Easier for my stomach to handle."

"It'll probably keep you out of more trouble, that way," Sparkle decided, after a moment's deliberation. "Smart. Maybe a little boring. But smart.

"Boring sounds kind of nice right now."

Flick didn't think it'd last.

"So, if it makes me boring, I'll take it. Been called worse."

Much worse.

"I'm sure there's a club for that around here," Sparkle noted. "If there isn't, there probably will be come the fall. And if that club exists... Shit, I might want to join it, too."

He gave his shoulders a shrug.

"I'd just as soon go back home, but this place is shitty at letting go."

"Uh huh."

He didn't plan on staying long. Couldn't. Not with Joi back home and Lucian Mandel loose and probably plotting his next murder. He couldn't afford to stay too long. He needed to get out soon.

"Well, we'll see how close it wants to hold me. I'll be interested to see if tries to keep me here or kicks me out."

"You're here at all, man," Sparkle replied, giving him a sympathetic look. "From here on until you graduate, usually it's pretty much hopeless."
