Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of ~~moddable~~ summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

"Yeah?" Victor said, a little sheepish. "But when you say it that way I feel like I shouldn't have gotten mad at you."

Kathy wasn't gonna say anything, but a pair of eyebrows were being lifted in his general direction.

Ya think?

Victor laughed nervously, the kind of laugh that admitted maybe he had screwed up. "Okay, point taken," he said. "Sorry."

Kathy laughed with him, leaning in to bump his shoulders if he'd let her. "It's okay. I'm not exactly at my best right now, either. Over-tired, over-caffeinated, overwhelmed."

Because, seriously. Pink Pony.

"None of this was in the brochure."

"I swear they have different brochures," Victor said, bumping her shoulders back. "Some mention powers, some don't, and no matter what they don't tell us about gremlins."

"Gremlins?!"

Now Kathy was torn between wanting to know and desperately not wanting to know.

"...Do I want to know?"

Maybe Victor would have some kind of insight to her dilemma!

Victor wasn't sure whether she wanted to know or not, so he just shrugged and told her. "It's a little green animal that makes you hallucinate if it bites you," he said. "But they're pretty shy. I've never seen one. Might just be a massive in-joke."

"Everything else is crazy, but that might be the in-joke." It was official. This place was insane.

Kathy closed her eyes and counted backwards from ten to one, trying to regain some composure and to keep herself from whining about finding anything normal here. When she opened them again, she gave Victor a shy smile. "Sorry. The whelming is continuing. Uhhh, is there a gymnastics team on the island?"

Step one: find something familiar to cling to.

"There's cheerleading during the school year," Victor said, hoping that might be the kind of answer that didn't make her freak out. "And the gym's pretty good -- I think it has a whole gymnastics set-up."

She wrinkled her nose at 'cheerleading,' but at least that was an enemy she knew how to deal with. "I've, uhh, never really been the cheerleading type," she said, "but the gym sounds pretty cool. I used to compete back home and I'd hate to fall out of condition."

So, okay. There were some normal things. Great! She could handle that.

"...What kind of sports teams do we have here?" She'd like a head's up on who to avoid, please.

"Not a lot. There was lacrosse in the fall but I don't know if it'll come back," Victor said. Though avoiding Jackson was probably a good idea, with or without lacrosse.

"It's ... not exactly a big activities school."

Probably because everyone was trying to avoid gremlins and ponies and stuff.

"...What do the cheerleaders cheer for if it's not sports? Like, a debate team or something?"

Okay, maybe she would get along with these cheerleaders.

"I think they mostly just cheer to celebrate the joy of being alive," Victor said philosophically. "... and yeah, it's kind of weird to have cheerleaders and no competitive sports. But my friend Gert did it, and she's, like, the least cheerleady person ever."

"So, you're basically saying that even the normal stuff is weird here," Kathy said, shaking her head and laughing a little bit. "Should I even ask what I've gotten myself into?"

"Sounds like you figured it out," Victor said. "It's weird, but the people are cool. And if it freaks you out, there's a bar that doesn't card."

Kathy didn't seem like a big drinker to him, but it was always worth throwing that one out there.

She wasn't, but Fandom seemed like a great place to start.

"Wait, it doesn't card? How is that even--" Wait. No. Kathy was learning. Asking questions just made her head hurt worse. Bringing up liquor licenses and liability and everything like that was a giant no. "A bar that doesn't card. Awesome. I'll keep that in mind."

See? She was trying?

"It's kind of its own world here," Victor said. "And -- I'm in 401 if you want to hang out, or rant at me, or whatever."

"Oh, I should go see what room I'm in," Kathy said, just realizing that would probably be a useful thing to know. "But please don't be surprised if I do come and visit a few times. I have the crazy idea that there's going to be a bunch of things I don't know."

"You might even be right about that," Victor agreed. "See you later."

"Thanks, Victor," Kathy said, giving him a smile. "Don't be surprised if I come bugging you sooner rather than later."

This island wasn't going to waste anytime breaking her, most like.
