Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of ~~moddable~~ summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

"Yeah, that's me. The nametag wasn't really working for me. Sorry if that caused any problems," Mira said. Okay, she wasn't actually that sorry, but she was going to try to be nice here. "You're Alec?"

"No, it's okay," he said. "Most of the others are wearing them, so I should have figured it out."

But he had opted to wander around grumpily instead.

"Anyway, welcome to Fandom."

"Thanks," Mira said. "So what's this whole sibling thing anyway? Because I've never had a brother and I've done okay for myself so far. No offense."

"None taken," Alec assured her. "I'm supposed to help you acclimatize and prepare yourself for some of the more unusual aspects about living here."

He paused. "Like the fact that there are dinosaurs and talking pink horses and... apparently teachers who dress as bats."

He nodded at each one in turn, lingering slightly on Batman because seriously, what.

"So from the sounds of it, the people already here aren't going to reject the idea that I'm from another galaxy," Mira said, looking around. "Either that, or you're all putting on a really good show to convince me that I'm the crazy one."

"No, being from another galaxy is kind of a small deal compared to the talking pony thing," Alec assured her. "We're on some kind of... nexus of different dimensions. People come here from all over the place. I'm from a version of this galaxy that has demons and vampires and stuff, and a lot of people aren't, for example."

"Okay, you're already starting to lose me. Let's keep it simple. The place is weird. Got it," Mira said. 'Nexus of different dimensions.' Okay.

"Right," Alec said, trying to figure out how to backtrack to something that Mira might find less difficult to wrap her head around. "Um, there's also a radio broadcast to be aware of. I promise it isn't as creepy as it sounds, but every day people go on the radio and report news and gossip that happens around here."

"So what we do is publicly broadcast for everyone to hear and that's somehow not creepy," Mira said. "What kind of school is this again?"

"Well, only local people can hear it," Alec offered. "It's... honestly, more than anything, I think it's a mechanism for employers to know their employees show up at work every day and for people to get jealous about parties that happened that they didn't know about."

It still sounded a little creepy.

"Anyway, if you're doing something you'd rather not be broadcast, just shut the door or shoo the squirrels away."

"Squirrels," Mira repeated.

That was all she was saying at the moment. Explain yourself, Alec. The WTFy look your little sib was giving you demanded it!

Alec had been hoping she wouldn't question it.

"They take the notes for the broadcasters."

So yeah.

Mira put a hand to her forehead and sighed. "Now I know what the girl by the shuttle felt like."

"Disoriented?" he guessed.

Being a sympathetic kind of guy, Alec decided now would be the time to hold his plate out to Mira in case she wanted a comforting celery stick or something.

"Like somebody's making up the weirdest crap they've ever heard in their lives," Mira said, holding up a hand to say thanks but no thanks. "You're lucky you have a pony handy over there. I didn't have that luxury."

"I don't know how lucky it would be if the pony was the one driving the actual shuttle," Alec said thoughtfully.

It would not have been lucky at all.

"At least it would make my story more believable," Mira said. "Not that I'd get on the bus at that point. But still."

"Yeah, I don't think she can drive," Alec decided. "It would probably be even more appalling if she can."

"What does she do here anyway?" Mira asked. "Besides talk."

"She's a teacher," Alec reported. "I took her class once." Which he said as though he found it horrifying, because... he did. "It was something like Friendship 101. I wasn't in it voluntarily."

Sigh.

"Which brings me to another note, which is that the classes offered here are a little unusual, I think."

"It's summer camp. I didn't expect physics or anything," Mira pointed out.

"Oh, right." Traditional school schedules were a mystery to him. "Well, the school runs year-round. And the classes are always equally weird."

"As weird as friendship as taught by a horse," Mira said. "Well, if you don't see me after this, it's because I decided to take my chances with a psychotic Wookiee. Which is something you probably have no reference for."

"None," he agreed. "But good luck with the Wookiee if it comes to that. Or the school if it doesn't."

"Time will tell," Mira said. "Well, thanks for the information. I'll be sure to set up squirrel deterrents everywhere I go."
