Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of ~~moddable~~ summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

Victor had a neatly-lettered nametag firmly attached to his shirt as he scoped out the newbies. Emily seemed to have adjusted okay; he hoped Katherine Li, whoever she was, would be able to say the same.

Kathy had found her nametag and put it on, then looked around to spot a Victor. The idea of having someone to show her the ropes was a nice one. From what she'd seen of the island and the school (a castle?!), knowing there was someone there to help her out was comforting.

Now she just had to hope that he'd volunteered to be helpful and not to be a brat to the new kids.

"Hi, Victor?" she said when she spotted the nametag. "I think you're looking for me?"

[SP okay?]

"If you're Katherine, I totally am," Victor said, smiling at her. She was cute and seemed relatively normal, though Victor was prepared to be proven wrong on that point. "Nice to meet you. Where are you coming from?"

Well, she'd be thrilled to hear about the first but in complete agreement about the second, at least for another few weeks.

"Kathy, please," she said, extending a hand to Victor and grinning back at him. "When I hear Katherine, I assume I'm in trouble for something. And I'm from LA. Sorry if I start to space out, it was a long plane trip and an early one."

Victor took the hand easily for a fast firm shake. "Kathy," he repeated. "See, now I know why they put us together. I'm from East L.A. And yeah, getting across the country takes forever, especially without a portal."

"You're from East L.A.?" Kathy was all grins now, so much so that she'd missed his reference to portals, which Mira had also mentioned. "I'm from Koreatown! That's so cool!"

She'd never been all that excited about meeting someone else from L.A. before, but then, she'd never left California before, except to visit family in Korea. Finding someone on the opposite side of the country who hailed from 'home' was a nice touch.

"I can't believe the school thought of that. That's so sweet."

"We used to go there for barbecue all the time," Victor grinned back. He wasn't sure the school paired people based on backgrounds, but if they did putting him with Kathy was a brilliant stroke. "That's awesome. The island's kind of claustrophobic next to the city, but it's a chill place to be most of the time."

It had definitely helped ease the bit of wariness she'd picked up at the shuttle terminal. Victor seemed nice and not at all like he was going to start spinning scifi stories about being from space or anything.

"Next time you head home, let me know and I'll give you a couple of great Korean places," Kathy promised. "They're deeper in than most of the tourists usually go, and they're cheaper, too. But so good. There's a place not too far from my house where the guy goes on a week-long trip to Korea every few months to get more seasonings and stuff."

As much as Kathy would have enjoyed talking about home all day and finding other shared locations, she figured that Victor was right and she should probably find out more about the island instead. "I don't know if chill is the word I'd use today," she said, pretending to pant a little. "But I'm glad to hear it. How long have you been coming to school here?"

No, no, he was just going to tell her he was an android! That was much easier to swallow.

"About 15 months," he said, scruffing a hand along the back of his neck. "Chill's not the word today, but wait until fall. And thanks, on the restaurant thing. I'd offer to do the same for Mexican, but -- seriously, throw a rock in L.A. and you hit a better taqueria than anything on this coast."

This was likely to remain a point of contention for Victor until he graduated.

A bit more gingerly, he added, "Also, we ... might not be from the same L.A. You ever heard of multiple dimensions?"

The android thing might have worked out all right; her L.A. did have superheroes and the like.

But multiple dimensions...

"Yeah," Kathy replied, turning wary again. "I read comics and scifi." You know. Fiction. Like the idea of multiple dimensions. "Why?"

"Because this place is what's called an interdimensional nexus," Victor answered, matching her wary tone with one of his own. "Like ... my world has superheroes and aliens. My roommate's doesn't, really, but it has demons and stuff. And some people are from worlds where none of that stuff is real at all. And then you get people from 1900 and people from a thousand years from now. It's like weird stuff soup."

"..."

Kathy really wasn't sure how to respond to that. "You're trying to get me to believe that there really are aliens, time-travelers, and demons? Really."

Okay, technically Cairax was supposed to be some kind of demon or something, but Kathy hadn't seen any kind of actual proof to support that.

"Was there some kind of Mr. What convention in town that I missed or something? Or is this the normal way of hazing and Sarah Space-Alien from the shuttle was told in advance?" Some kind of school-wide conspiracy that she'd been left out of or something. She tried not to look hurt, but she'd really thought they'd been bonding!

"Look, I'm just gonna go find my room or something. You can tell everyone I fell for it, if you want, okay?"

Victor looked hurt in return. "Dude, why would I sign up for the big brother gig just to be mean to a new kid? I swear I'm telling the truth. The shuttle chick's probably really from space."

"Because, I don't know, people think it's fun to tease the new kids?" Kathy argued. "Occam's razor: hmm, am I really going to school in an interdimensional meeting hall, or are people have fun teasing me? Gee, which should I think?"

Sorry, Victor. She probably would have been less cranky about all this if she'd had more sleep. Still probably hurt, though.

"I don't think that's how Occam's razor works," Victor argued right back, a hint of annoyance creeping into his voice. "Either a, everybody at this school is a liar and we spend a bunch of money getting people to dress up just to play a joke on the new kids -- seriously, look by the teachers, there's a pink pony over there -- or b, the nexus thing is real. And personally I think conspiracy theories are bogus, so I say Occam says I'm not teasing you."

Sure, Kathy had seen the teachers swirling around in capes, but she hadn't caught sight of the pony yet. "Right, the pink pony," she snarked, turning to expect some kind of mascot or something.

And saw Pinkie Pie. Bouncing. In ways that physics suggested was damn near impossible.

"What the...?" The rest of that sentence included language that her parents would have been very displeased to discover she knew. She rubbed her eyes and peered again. "What am I looking at?"

"Pinkie Pie," Victor said simply (and with a hint of smugness). "She teaches classes about friendship and glitter. Pretty sure her world is all ponies."

Which Victor found a vaguely terrifying thought. One Pinkie Pie was bad enough.

"So ... do you want to sit down or anything?"

Sitting down was a good idea, Victor. A great idea. In fact, Kathy was going to do that right there. On the grass. Pretty much exactly where she'd been standing.

Thump.

"Is--is she some kind of superhero?" she asked. "Like the Awesome Ape? I mean..." Okay, Kathy wasn't entirely sure what the pink pony's powers would be or how she would fight crime, but there was a bouncing pink pony over there and Kathy's tired, jet-lagged brain was trying to make sense of that.

"Not that I've heard," Victor said, and -- more gracefully - took a seat next to Kathy. "What's an Awesome Ape?"

Other than something going on his list of potential code name inspirations. Not that he was an ape, but awesome was a good word.

"Superhero," Kathy mumbled. Sorry, Victor, but you were still demoted to the second most interesting person in Kathy's field of vision. "He's in Chicago. Showed up a few weeks ago. I'm still not sure if he's a real, like, uplifted ape or something else. The internet's not sure and every theory has someone with 'proof,' you know? Like whatever Cairax's deal over in Venice Beach is."

Her brain slowly ticked over and she glanced at Victor again. "Wait, didn't you say your L.A. has superheroes in it?" She couldn't believe she'd said your L.A. Like this alternate dimension thing might be real.

"Like the Might Dragon and Blockbuster and stuff?"

"Or like Captain America and Spider-Man," Victor said slowly. "Wait, so we're both from L.A.s with superheroes, but completely different superheroes?"

That was weird. Cool, but weird.

"I guess so?" Kathy still wasn't sure she was buying all of this. Sure, the pony was a great argument for some truthfulness, but she was only a single, verifiable datapoint. The things Mira and Victor were saying still lacked proof. "The superheroes just started showing up recently, though. I might not have heard of yours yet?"

"No, ours have been around for, like ... a while," Victor said. "Some of the old ones go back to World War II. And I would have heard from home if some ape started calling himself a hero."

"This is too weird," Kathy mumbled. "You're really telling me that we're from L.A. but from different dimensions, the girl from the airport really was from outer space, and there's a pink pony over there that's--you said she's a teacher?"

Kathy had never felt the urge to drink before. Now might be an excellent time to start.

"And you got mad at me for thinking this was some kind of hoax?"

Or maybe some kind of jet-lagged delusion brought about by inhaling too much recycled air.

"Yeah?" Victor said, a little sheepish. "But when you say it that way I feel like I shouldn't have gotten mad at you."
