Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

When the students arrive, they see a row of tables along each side of the classroom. The row on the left has a number of telephones and the row on the right has a number of computers.

"Afternoon, everyone," Lorelai said once they'd all arrived and taken their seats. "Today we're going to learn about modern technology. Communication is a very important part of our society and, currently, the most efficient and widely used methods of communication are the telephone and the internet."

She went on to give a brief history of the telephone and the internet.

"Now, half of you can play with the phones and the other half can play with the computers. In twenty minutes, we'll switch, so everyone has a chance to try everything. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to help if you need it. And those of you who have already mastered these skills can offer help as well."

Kaylee thought the methods of communication were much better where she was from. The phone was just kind of strange to her.

Telephones, right. They could be that hard, could they? Afterall, he had managed to figure out how to work that so called 'voicemail' thing in his dorm room. Alfons stopped at a table to the left, eyeing the phone in front of him. Why couldn't they have had these in 1923? It seemed so much easier. Hesitating for a moment, he picked it up, only to hang it back up again.

Maybe he shouldn't be messing with things he wasn't quite sure of. And asking for help? Would be a little too embarrassing. The rocket scientist can't use a telephone, right.

This one, Cedric knew and he happily dialed his own number and left himself a voicemail. He'll worry about how dumb that was later.

Pete? Still not terribly familiar with the phone.

Or the fact that, you know, you could TALK into it.

So he was tapping out morse code on his desk with it. After making it play "Three Blind Mice".

At some point, he'd figure out that the odd noise was someone screaming at him to stop on the other end of the phone.

Mac? So used to this kind of communication. She may have drop called Principal Clemmons' office several times. She's wasn't sure what to do with the remaining 15 minutes or so, so she's decided taking it apart is way more fun.

Lyra looked around and, seeing a phone open, sat down at it, lifting the receiver off the hook and poking at the buttons.

"Ooh, Pan, they make beeps, like the one in the room!" The pine marten crawled up onto the phone and began pressing buttons with his nose.

Evie listened intently to the lecture, then took a deep breath and began to work the phone.

At some point during the summer, Briar had learned how to use the phone. He still liked poking at it though.

Zuko recognised the monitor, but this time the display didn't show him. When he realised it were mostly words on the screen, he took a step back and decided to pass on this one.

Computers, he could do this. Bel started surfing the web. Whether the websites were school-approved remained to be seen.

Peter typed in google.com and started to google all of his friends. Turns out Quagmire was once given the key to the city of Amsterdam...

Cedric at least knew how to use email. The rest is foreign but he does manage to pull up a card game of some sort and promptly loses.

Approaching the row on the right after the little phone incident, Alfons found a whole other ballgame waiting for him. He paused at the computer, staring at it as if it were the most fascinating thing in the world. He didn't do much more then that, unsure of what you were actually supposed to do with it. Yes, the internet was connected to it, whatever the internet really was, but...

Modern technology was far too much for him. He had to surpress the strong urge to begin taking the computer apart rather then sitting down to do what he was supposed to.

Aeryn can more than handle the phone, but the computer is not a happy thing for her. If they would just keep all the letters on the keyboard in the right order, it would be much easier.
