Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

When the students arrive, they see a row of tables along each side of the classroom. The row on the left has a number of telephones and the row on the right has a number of computers.

"Afternoon, everyone," Lorelai said once they'd all arrived and taken their seats. "Today we're going to learn about modern technology. Communication is a very important part of our society and, currently, the most efficient and widely used methods of communication are the telephone and the internet."

She went on to give a brief history of the telephone and the internet.

"Now, half of you can play with the phones and the other half can play with the computers. In twenty minutes, we'll switch, so everyone has a chance to try everything. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to help if you need it. And those of you who have already mastered these skills can offer help as well."

Gwynn looked at Kaylee and smiled. "Uhmm... yes, please? I have no idea what this thing is supposed to do."

"The internet is shiny. You can find so much information on it," Kaylee said as she started to show Gwynn how to surf the web, starting with Google.

Gwynn watched Kaylee and wrote down everything she was doing.

"Google?"

"If you wanna find out about anything, you type it into the search engine," Kaylee explained, pointing out the search engine on the screen. "What's somethin' you're interested in?"

"Horses."

Kaylee pointed out all the websites about horses that appeared. "You just click on any of those. This works for just about anything you wanna know about."

Gwynn's eyes widened as she took in the long list that was on the screen in front of her. Then she looked at Kaylee.

"Anything?"

"You can even google other people. I've never done that while bored at work. Never," Kaylee said, snickering a bit.

Okay, now Kaylee had Gwynn's attention instead of the computer.

"You can look for people on this thing?"

Kaylee nodded. "Even famous people."

"But how does it know?"

"Magic?" Kaylee said with a shrug. "I really got no clue as to how it knows."

Gwynn looks incredibly impressed.

"So, you just type their name in here to look them up?"

"Pretty much," Kaylee said, grinning. "You can do lots of other stuff online, too, like check email and play games. Which I also never do at work."

She tried saying that with a straight face and failed.
