Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

When the students arrive, they see a row of tables along each side of the classroom. The row on the left has a number of telephones and the row on the right has a number of computers.

"Afternoon, everyone," Lorelai said once they'd all arrived and taken their seats. "Today we're going to learn about modern technology. Communication is a very important part of our society and, currently, the most efficient and widely used methods of communication are the telephone and the internet."

She went on to give a brief history of the telephone and the internet.

"Now, half of you can play with the phones and the other half can play with the computers. In twenty minutes, we'll switch, so everyone has a chance to try everything. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to help if you need it. And those of you who have already mastered these skills can offer help as well."

"That's right. I think..." He hadn't actually called anyone. Or had anyone to call, as of yet. He paused for a moment, hearing a strange sound coming from the phone. It was ringing. As quickly as he could, trying to act cool, he thrust it into Zuko's hands. "Telephones are amazing! You should try this one, really."

Zuko stared down at the telephone, he carefully placed it against his right ear and was about to inform Alfons that it wasn't ringing anymore when someone spoke to him.

Zuko blinked and looked nervously at Alfons. "My name is Zuko, son of Ursa and Fire Lord Ozai."

There was a pause and Zuko scowled. "Of course you haven't heard of them... No, this isn't... What do you mean?... I am not! Show some respect!"

Zuko pulled the telephone away from his ear and scowled down at it, looking like he was considering strangling it.

It was hard to not laugh as he watched Zuko speak to the person on the phone. Though he did feel terrible for simply pawning it off on his poor roommate, he had to admit that the outcome was rather funny.

Reaching out, he took it back, opting to hang it up rather then cause any more damage. "So, who was it?"

"Some woman named Tex," Zuko frowned, not knowing he'd just pissed off the Sheriff. "She was rude."
