Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

When the students arrive, they see a row of tables along each side of the classroom. The row on the left has a number of telephones and the row on the right has a number of computers.

"Afternoon, everyone," Lorelai said once they'd all arrived and taken their seats. "Today we're going to learn about modern technology. Communication is a very important part of our society and, currently, the most efficient and widely used methods of communication are the telephone and the internet."

She went on to give a brief history of the telephone and the internet.

"Now, half of you can play with the phones and the other half can play with the computers. In twenty minutes, we'll switch, so everyone has a chance to try everything. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to help if you need it. And those of you who have already mastered these skills can offer help as well."

"Space... travel? Like, between the stars?" Lyra may have looked the teeniest bit incredulous. "My world's scholars say it's impossible."

"I flew here," Luke said, eyes twinkling. "How would they explain that?"

"They wouldn't. They'd call you a heretic, and if you insisted on spreading stories contrary to what they taught, they'd have you locked up." Pan left the phone off the hook and moved over to Luke's phone, dialing the number for their voicemail (http://daemonridden.livejournal.com/292.html?mode=reply).

"At least, most of them are like that. Some are more openminded. How did you fly here? Was it in a zeplin?"

Luke looked confused. "What's a zeplin? I flew in a starfighter. X-wing class."

"A zeplin's a... well, it's like a balloon filled with, er, hydrogen, I think. And there's a cabin that's hung from the balloon, so it floats." Lyra bit her lip. "Could I see it? Your star, uh, starfighter? It sounds neat."

The phone started beeping because it was off the hook for too long, and Pan dropped the receiver and ran back over to Lyra.

Luke smiled and turned the phone off. "No harm done," he said to Pan. "And of course!" He beamed. "It's in town. I haven't checked on it all week. What other classes do you have? Maybe we could go look at it some afternoon."

He thought he was being terribly smooth.

Lyra grinned, excited. "I've three classes today, but none tomorrow. I've never seen a starfighter before."

She may have bounced a little bit.

"I have Criminal Justice tomorrow with Mr. Tall, Masked, and Slightly Creepy," Luke said, "but the rest of the day is free. Do you want to meet me by the front gates in the afternoon?"

"Great, that sounds like fun." Lyra poked at the phone for a couple more seconds, and then stood up. "I thin kI'm going to play with the, uh, computers now. See you later."

Luke gave her a wave. "See you tomorrow."
