Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

When the students arrive, they see a row of tables along each side of the classroom. The row on the left has a number of telephones and the row on the right has a number of computers.

"Afternoon, everyone," Lorelai said once they'd all arrived and taken their seats. "Today we're going to learn about modern technology. Communication is a very important part of our society and, currently, the most efficient and widely used methods of communication are the telephone and the internet."

She went on to give a brief history of the telephone and the internet.

"Now, half of you can play with the phones and the other half can play with the computers. In twenty minutes, we'll switch, so everyone has a chance to try everything. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to help if you need it. And those of you who have already mastered these skills can offer help as well."

"I don't use the phone often myself, but I think you just punch in some numbers and let it ring until someone picks up," Kaylee explained. "I'd rather talk to people face to face anyway."

"I think I can handle that." Lavender grinned at Kaylee. "Yeah, me too, can't imagine using it all the time. It's weird to not see people's expressions." Lavender picked up the phone and held the mouth piece up to ear so that the earpiece was near her mouth and began dialing her room. Something about this wasn't quite right but she wasn't sure what.

"Oh, I think you got it the wrong way," Kaylee said, indicating the phone. She smiled. "I'm Kaylee, by the way."

"Oh!" Lavender blushed, realizing her mistake. "I'm Lavender, it's nice to meet you, Kaylee."

"Nice to meet you, too," Kaylee said, still smiling. "I think, once you figure it out, the phone ain't real hard to use."

"Oh! Kaylee, are you Joxer's girlfriend?"

Kaylee might have brightened a little at the mention of Joxer's name. "I am indeed."

"I met, Joxer last night and he was telling about you. I believe he called you beautiful and amazing."

"Where and uh when are you from?"

Kaylee blushed a little. "Awww, he's always sayin' things like that for some reason."

"I'm from 500 years in the future from a planet far away from here," she continued.
