Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

When the students arrive, they see a row of tables along each side of the classroom. The row on the left has a number of telephones and the row on the right has a number of computers.

"Afternoon, everyone," Lorelai said once they'd all arrived and taken their seats. "Today we're going to learn about modern technology. Communication is a very important part of our society and, currently, the most efficient and widely used methods of communication are the telephone and the internet."

She went on to give a brief history of the telephone and the internet.

"Now, half of you can play with the phones and the other half can play with the computers. In twenty minutes, we'll switch, so everyone has a chance to try everything. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to help if you need it. And those of you who have already mastered these skills can offer help as well."

"Oh," Joxer said. He scratched his head and looked for an E.

"I see and 'n'," he said. "And a... oh, there it is." Joxer pointed on the screen, smudging the monitor with his finger.

Pete laboriously moved the mouse over so that the arrow was pointing at the Internet Explorer icon, and clicked away.

Eventually, he managed to pull up the browser.

"Now, we need to find the right letters on that thing." He pointed to the keyboard. "3 Ws, and a bunch of others."

"I found one w," Joxer said, after a moment of looking. "I don't see the other two, though."

"That may be problematic. Try pressin' that one."

Joxer pressed the 'w' key.

"Did it work?"

"No idea. Try it again."

Joxer pressed the 'w' key twice more.

"Maybe we need to chant or something?"

"Wait, wait, I found the three Ws!" Pete pointed at the little bar on the screen that now had three Ws on it.

"Now, where's the dot?"

Somewhere, someplace, there may be a member of a marching band chanting a mantra of 'I am a dot'.

And in fact, there also is somewhere, someplace, a Warner sister Dot getting up to some mischief.

These does not, however, help Pete and Joxer in the slightest, as those aren't the dots they are looking for.

Joxer scrutinized the keyboard. "A-ha!" he said, and pressed the key. "It had a little arrow on it too, though."

"Well, just hope you didn't break it by hittin' the wrong button." Pete stared at the screen. "Now we gotta find a G. And two Os."

"Oh, here they are," Joxer said. He pressed the 'g', then the 'o', then the '0'.

"Ha. This technology stuff is easy."

"Is there another G in there?"

"Let me just find the... there it is," Joxer said. He hit the key. "There. The 'g' spot has been pressed."

"Good, good, just like that," Pete replied absently. "Okay, now we need an L and an E, another dot, then a c, an o, and an m. Then we can look at tentacles."

Joxer looked up from the keyboard and stared at Pete.

"Tentacles?!"

That may have been a bit loud.

Pete grinned. "Hell yeah. With these girls not wearin' much clothin'. . . . We'll have to find a lot more letters before we get there, though. Now, come on, where's the L and the E?"

Any of Joxer's fear of tentacles was quashed by the idea of girls with not much clothing.

He found the L and E and pressed the keys. "What else was there?"

"One more dot, then c, o, m. Hurry up!"

Joxer hit the keys, as asked, after a minute of hunting and pecking.

"There," he said.

He hadn't pressed an enter key or anything.

"Where's the girls?"

"Oh, right, I forgot! You gotta push the button that says 'enter'. THEN you get the tentacles."

Joxer hesitantly pressed the enter key.

There was definitely no tentacles on www.go0gle.com

There wasn't much of anything, in fact.

"Huh."

Pete frowned. Then reached out to whap Joxer upside the head.

"Dammit, Joxer, you broke it! You broke the internet!"

"Ow!" Joxer rubbed the back of his head where Pete hit it.

"Maybe it..." He pointed up at the top of the screen. "That isn't an o!"

"And who's fault is that? Fix it! Fix it!"

"I'll fix it! I'll fix it!" Joxer flailed for a bit and tried to figure out how to clear the box and start over.

It took him five minutes, but he did it. He even managed to type the URL correctly.

"There, fixed!" He said, hoping he won't get hit again.
