Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

When the students arrive, they see a row of tables along each side of the classroom. The row on the left has a number of telephones and the row on the right has a number of computers.

"Afternoon, everyone," Lorelai said once they'd all arrived and taken their seats. "Today we're going to learn about modern technology. Communication is a very important part of our society and, currently, the most efficient and widely used methods of communication are the telephone and the internet."

She went on to give a brief history of the telephone and the internet.

"Now, half of you can play with the phones and the other half can play with the computers. In twenty minutes, we'll switch, so everyone has a chance to try everything. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to help if you need it. And those of you who have already mastered these skills can offer help as well."

"Well, they don't *actually* walk like that. It's a stylistic representation, and intended to show both hierarchies and symbolize action, but having scene the tombs in question, this song is even funnier." Evie bounced a bit more, singing along: "~All the kids in the marketplace say, Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh, Walk like an Egyptian..." She gave a little cough. "Anyway. I think I shall have that for my ringtone, since you're supposed to choose one."

Stark found himself nodding his head in time with the music, because it was catchy even if he was a little confused by the words.

"I only have the phone in my room. It just rings. No music. I think I like the music better than the ringing."

Evie nodded earnestly. "And the little pamphlet says you can set it to sing different little songs if different people are calling! So you know if it's very very important, and a teacher needs to tell you something, very important, like your roommate has locked herself out of the room, or only somewhat important, like your friend wishes to meet you for mochas somewhere else." She sighed happily. "I do so love modern technology.

Walk like and E-gyp-tiannnn....

Evie hit another button, and frowned. "Oh, dear. No, that was supposed to call Cairo, why is it asking for a 'phone card'?"

"Phone card?" Stark shook his head. "I don't know. Where's Cairo?" Really, one of these days he was going to have to learn a little geography.

"On the other side of the planet," Evie waves vaguely with the phone, and barely keeps from dropping it, "that way. It's the largest city on the African continent. I wanted to call the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and ask if they have any exhibits found by the Carnahans." She frowned at the phone, then shook it, and handed it to Stark. "Perhaps the phone card is in the pamphlet?" She picked it up and shook it. Nothing dropped out.

Stark was briefly tempted to pry the phone open to look for a card, but then decided the phone wouldn't have asked for a card if it already had one.

"I've never been anywhere on the planet but here," he said. "Maybe we could ask? About the card."

"Do you think that would help?" Evie looked around hopefully for Jaye, or, failing her, Marty, who she hadn't spoken with yet. "And Egypt is lovely. It's mostly desert, but the Nile River makes it much more interesting and entirely livable. I miss it."

"It couldn't hurt to ask," Stark said with a shrug.
