Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

When the students arrive, they see a row of tables along each side of the classroom. The row on the left has a number of telephones and the row on the right has a number of computers.

"Afternoon, everyone," Lorelai said once they'd all arrived and taken their seats. "Today we're going to learn about modern technology. Communication is a very important part of our society and, currently, the most efficient and widely used methods of communication are the telephone and the internet."

She went on to give a brief history of the telephone and the internet.

"Now, half of you can play with the phones and the other half can play with the computers. In twenty minutes, we'll switch, so everyone has a chance to try everything. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to help if you need it. And those of you who have already mastered these skills can offer help as well."

Zuko recognised the monitor, but this time the display didn't show him. When he realised it were mostly words on the screen, he took a step back and decided to pass on this one.

Lorelai frowned at his reaction.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"Nothing. I just don't think I'll be needing that," Zuko informed her. He paused for a moment, remembering something and maybe it would distract her. "What part of Lorelaigilmoredanes is first name and what last?"

"Lorelai is my first name," she explained. "Gilmore was my name before I got married, Danes is my husband's name, so I put them together."

She gave Zuko a careful look. "I think learning how to use a computer will be beneficial for you here," she said. "Is there a particular reason you don't want to try it?"

Someone with three names was a first to him and it took a moment before he stopped boggling.

"We don't have computers where I'm from. I won't be around long enough to have to use it here," he said stubbornly.

"Why don't you humor me?" Lorelai asked. "At least let me show you how to check your school email address."

Zuko scowled at the computers as if this was all their fault. "It would take too long. I can't read your characters very well," he admitted reluctantly.

Lorelai nodded in understanding. "You have a different alphabet?" she asked.

He shook his head. "No alphabet. It is much like what they call chinese in this world."

"Well no wonder you're confused," Lorelai said. "Hasn't this come up in any of your other classes?"

"They aren't reading heavy," he said evasively.

"Since you speak English, it shouldn't be that hard to teach you the basics," Lorelai said. "I'd be happy to work with you during my office hours."

The note Yondaime had written came to mind and it seemed to take a lot of effort for Zuko to finally nod in agreement.

"Good," Lorelai said. "Can you stop by on Thursday?" She gave him handwavy directions to her office.

"I don't have class on Thursday," Zuko replied. "I'll be there."

Lorelai smiled. "Bring any papers you have that you've been having trouble with, okay?"

"Can I tell you a secret?" Lorelai asked, lowering her voice.

Zuko gave her a confused look, wondering why a teacher would want to bother. "If you must."

"There are a lot of people who have lived in this country their entire lives that can't read," Lorelai told him. "So the fact that you're from somewhere with a different way of writing is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, okay?"

"I am not ashamed," he said stubbornly with a lot more conviction than the situation probably warranted.

Lorelai wasn't going to argue with him. "Good," she said. "I'll see you on Thursday then."
