Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.

Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

It was time for the picnic to begin!

The following list of roommate assignments was located on one of the tables:

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change.

Ichigo glanced down at the subsitute shinigami badge dangling from the keychain attached to his trousers. So far it had been quiet and it was a small island so the chances of running into a hollow seemed slim. He hoped. Sharing a room with someone who didn't know what he was, wasn't going to be easy.

So how did someone named Andrew Wiggin look? Wiggin sounded funny.

He recognised the name on the tag. It was a Japanese name; the name of his roommate. Ender's memories of long narrow barracks full of boys were still fresh, but so were his memories of Mazer.

Assigned siblings. Assigned roommates. The patterns of his life had not yet abandoned him.

"Ichigo Kurosaki?" he asked, approaching the boy. Wiry and red-haired; it made him wonder. So this was what they were giving him, now. "I'm Ender Wiggin."

Ichigo took in the boy for an instant, measuring him up and deciding that he didn't look annoying like Uryuu or Renji.

"I guess that makes you my roommate, then," he said with an almost smile. "Ender? I thought the paper said Andrew?"

Chuck was very pleased to see that he was living on Blair's floor and even more pleased to find that his roommate was a girl. Or had a girl's name. He was pleased either way.

Susan, on the other hand, was not particularly pleased to find that her roommate was a boy. "Chuck?" she asked, approaching the boy and giving him a careful once-over.

"Susan," Chuck guessed. He was also looking her over. Leering, actually. When he was satisfied (and he was very satisfied) he stuck out his hand. "Nice to meet you."

Angela had decided by by this point, that she liked the nametag idea. It gave her a great excuse to check people out while she searched for her new roommate.

By the time she found Hannibal, she'd already decided she was going to really like this summer school idea.

"Hi." A grin spread on her face. "I'm Angela. I think I'm your new roommate."

"What?! Oh no. No, no, no, no!" Helen's hands were on her hips as she glared at the list of roommate assignments. "I am not rooming with a boy."

She'd known this whole thing was a bad idea.

She spun around and stared at him. "And in what way would your having a girlfriend possibly change the fact that they expect me to room with a boy?"

A bumblebee? She tilted her head at the list and hummed a little. Did bees go to school here, then? How odd.

Well, she supposed, it was no stranger than the Kobolds and they managed quite well back home. She'd have to see.

"And hopefully I don't get stung," she mused. "That would be unpleasant..."

Bumblebee glanced about once he'd gathered his room assignment, searching for a Viki. It would likely be a female, he thought, so he began approaching nearby females to inquire. "Are you a Viki?"

Lee had a new roommate again. He wondered if this one would last. So, he wandered around, looking for this Warren person.

"You. Are you Lee?"

Warren was clearly thrilled. See how thrilled he was?

Katchoo was just going to assume that Emma had been preoccupied with bigger concerns than reading the school literature thoroughly -- because for one, she was sure Emma had said the school was in Virginia, and while geography had never been her strong point she was pretty sure there were no glaciers off the coast of Virginia.

But this roommate thing was going to be a bad, bad idea . . .

Bender, still nametagged, was standing by the list, an eye zooming in on the list. "Room-mate?" he announced loudly. Humans weren't great at the roommate thing as far as Bender was concerned. No sense of space, but ah well, maybe they'd found someone with the right relative volume.

"But they better not move all my stuff." All the that stuff he wasn't obviously carrying.

"Jenny" sounded like a nice, normal, sensible sort of name. Agnes looked around, relieved that she'd probably be dealing with someone who she could talk to. Her last friend had had the brainpower of a very small, chirrupy rodent -- and a stupid one, at that -- and she was sick to death of old women who treated her like an idiot. So, nice and normal was good.
