Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.

Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

It was time for the picnic to begin!

Lee had a new roommate again. He wondered if this one would last. So, he wandered around, looking for this Warren person.

Roomies, too? Warren sighed and made a bit of a grunt sound as he looked around for his new roommate.

"You. Are you Lee?"

Warren was clearly thrilled. See how thrilled he was?

"That'd be me," Lee said, smiling at the guy. "Warren, right?"

"Warren," Warren agreed with a nod and another noncommittal grunt sound. "You been here long?"

Warren was only a deep, thoughtful conversationalist when he had fortune cookie fortunes directly in front of him. But he was trying.

"Hit a year a few days ago," Lee said. "So, yeah. Good to meet you, Warren. Where you from?"

"Maxtown," Warren replied. It was a booming sort of metropolis. Really. "Was only told about coming here a couple of days ago."

This statement was intended to relay a multitude of notions, from how disgruntled Warren was at being sent here in the first place, to how disgruntled he was at only having three days to tell his employers he was leaving the Paper Lantern, pack, and arrange transport all the way to Virginia. Which looked more like Antarctica, really, when he'd stepped off the causeway.

It relayed disgruntlement, certainly. If there was any deeper meaning to be found in that, it was going to take a little digging to get to.

"Are there always icebergs off the coast of Virginia?"

"No," Lee said, unable not to laugh. "We're in Antarctica right now."

And now Warren was being laughed at. This did not improve his mood at all.

"Virginia... is in Antarctica?"

There was a pause while Warren attempted to sort this revelation out in his head. And then another bit of a venture into the wild territory of conversation. "Transportation ray, robots, or alien invaders?"

He'd learned about all of the above at his last school. It stood to reason that one of them might be responsible for something so... severe.

"I don't think it's any of those," Lee said. "The island just...moves. We've been to France and Greece and Madagascar. It just moves. We don't even feel it."

"Oh." There was another pause for consideration. "That's all?"

Fandom wouldn't be the first school he'd attended that was situated on a moving island, at least.

"Has it been doing that for a while?"

"Since the beginning of the summer," Lee told him. "And that's just one of it's many quirks. You been to a place like this before?"

"My last school was on a moving island," Warren replied with a bit of a shrug. "But it flew. Was made to do that, so it was difficult to find."

Warren raised an eyebrow.

"This one wasn't so difficult to find at all. Like it wants to be found, or something."

"This one has brochures," Lee reminded him. "Flying island? I...wish this island would fly. I miss flying."

"Our school bus flew," Warren mused. "Not much flies around here? Really?"

That was a new and novel concept, actually.

"Well, we have some ships and a flight sim," Lee said. "But nothing that flies like that. I haven't seen anyone with wings either. You got wings, Warren?"

"No," Warren replied, though he didn't seem to think that such a question was really out of the ordinary at all. "But I know someone who can fly."

And, sure, the someone he knew was his best friend. But saying as much would give off the impression that there were actually people out there who he had the capacity to get along with, and that was just bad for his antisocial image.

"Is he here with you?" Lee asked, looking around.

"No, he isn't." Warren looked around anyhow. You could never be too sure when Stronghold was going to pop up. It was like being constantly right there was the kid's third superpower. "He's not a student here. Could probably get him to give me a copy of the bus driver's card, though."

It helped, sometimes, to have a friend with connections. Ron Wilson: Bus Driver had pretty much hung on Stronghold's every word since he had found out he was a Stronghold.

"...what good would a bus driver's card do here?" Lee asked.

"The bud driver drives a rocket-powered flying school bus."

Warren figured that this was something of a point to be made. Somehow.

[Ack! I have to head to work. SP?]

"What good would a bus driver's card do without the bus?" Lee asked slowly.

[Sure sure! Don't work too hard!]

"The card," Warren replied, equally slowly, "has the bus driver's phone number on it. And then you call. And you bribe him to let you pilot the bus. Or something."

Or something.

[Me, work too hard? Never!]

"Hey, that might come in handy," Lee decided. "You good at bribes?"

That right there was a small smirk, forming on Warren's lips.

"Generally, my bribes tend to be along the lines of 'if you ever cross me again, I'll roast you alive,'" he shared. Because he was a tender, sharing sort of person, that way.

"My type of bribe," Lee said, smile forming on his lips. "Nothing like going right for what you want."
