Ethics [Thursday, October 26, 6th period]

Vader swept into the room precisely on time, the door slamming behind him like usual. "I trust that your time with your relatives was excruciating and uncomfortable. I do not care about your problems to begin with, and if you try to use them as an excuse for why your assignment is not complete, I will not care even more." The leather creaked in his gloves. "So don't try it." It wasn't a suggestion.

He paced in front of the classroom. "While I am interviewing you all separately--" the menace in his voice was completely intentional, "--the rest of the class will be discussing the Golden Rule. 'Do unto others as you would have done unto you.'" Vader snorted. "Hopelessly naive way to live your life or useful philosophy?"

It was very obvious which option Vader preferred.

He pointed towards the first student. "Let's begin."

Jamie nods toward Alanna. "She was able to hug you in an effort to cheer you up. Since You and I have never hugged your lordship I would consider her to have surpassed her master. Unless you'd be willing to accept a hug from me right now?

"My partner wasn't around," Bel said. "The assignment didn't get done. But I pretty much know what I need to know anyway."

Jack looked at his hands, considering what he'd say, then made a snap decision. He looked up and told Vader matter-of-factly, "I learned what River had to teach me, but I'm not going to do the assignment." He grinned a little. "But I can make you a lovely apple carving instead."

Zero looked Vader right in the eye--well, right in the mask--and said, "I flaked. Oops."

"Jamie is insane."

River thought for a moment. "Jack made a lot of effort with the apple sculptures. He paid attention. And practised." She figured Vader didn't want to know about personal conversations and friendly flirting.

Tyler glanced over at Rory, his bruise still faintly visible around one eye. "She's got some muscle on her, but she's too nice. She can't understand why you'd want to hurt anyone."

"He's strong, he knows what is coming and what can happen as far as the dangers of it and he doesn't back down. It's impressive."

"Elizabeth followed directions well and by the end of it was able to make a pretty good snowflake," Isabel said. "I'd use them when I was decorating for the holidays."

Rory shrugged. "Tyler was a good master. He taught me well. And I punched him in the eye."

"Aeryn showed me what I needed to do," Stark said with a shrug. "And I was able to do it, so she must have showed me correctly. And I didn't crash the ship and kill us both. So that's good, even if it was just a simulation."

"The whole point of the rule is the way you should treat others," Jamie pointed out. "Not how you are supposed to be treated in return. What's so naive about that?"

"It's a nice idea, but the underlying assumption is wrong--it assumes that everyone would want to be treated well, which isn't always the case." Sam frowned as she thought about something else. "Besides, even if it's the ideal, it's not at all practical--should you not shoot someone who's attacking you because you wouldn't want to be shot yourself, letting them continue with their attack? That's ridiculous."

"I thought the Golden Rule was Do Unto Others Before They Can Do Unto You."

That is wrong on too many levels to count.
