Ethics [Thursday, October 26, 6th period]

Vader swept into the room precisely on time, the door slamming behind him like usual. "I trust that your time with your relatives was excruciating and uncomfortable. I do not care about your problems to begin with, and if you try to use them as an excuse for why your assignment is not complete, I will not care even more." The leather creaked in his gloves. "So don't try it." It wasn't a suggestion.

He paced in front of the classroom. "While I am interviewing you all separately--" the menace in his voice was completely intentional, "--the rest of the class will be discussing the Golden Rule. 'Do unto others as you would have done unto you.'" Vader snorted. "Hopelessly naive way to live your life or useful philosophy?"

It was very obvious which option Vader preferred.

He pointed towards the first student. "Let's begin."

"The whole point of the rule is the way you should treat others," Jamie pointed out. "Not how you are supposed to be treated in return. What's so naive about that?"

"Possibly because people have an ulterior motive when they treat someone nice. It automatically makes someone think you want something when you are nice so just to be nice for niceness sake might make a person appear to be naive. Not that you are naive to treat someone with common decency but some people might perceive it as such." Maia said before she realized what she was saying. It was rare she spoke out in class discussions.

"Because all it takes is one person not to agree with you on that and you're frelled," Aeryn points out. She may be a bit of a cynic.

"All I'm saying? Is that the rule is about treating people how you want to be treated yourself," Jamie pointed out. "So the way I look at it? I'm nice to you until you try to frell me then I own your ass. Um. Not your ass per se but you get my meaning."

Aeryn considers this, and nods. "Good interpretation then, I think."

"It's a nice idea, but the underlying assumption is wrong--it assumes that everyone would want to be treated well, which isn't always the case." Sam frowned as she thought about something else. "Besides, even if it's the ideal, it's not at all practical--should you not shoot someone who's attacking you because you wouldn't want to be shot yourself, letting them continue with their attack? That's ridiculous."

"I thought the Golden Rule was Do Unto Others Before They Can Do Unto You."
