Ethics [Thursday, October 26, 6th period]

Vader swept into the room precisely on time, the door slamming behind him like usual. "I trust that your time with your relatives was excruciating and uncomfortable. I do not care about your problems to begin with, and if you try to use them as an excuse for why your assignment is not complete, I will not care even more." The leather creaked in his gloves. "So don't try it." It wasn't a suggestion.

He paced in front of the classroom. "While I am interviewing you all separately--" the menace in his voice was completely intentional, "--the rest of the class will be discussing the Golden Rule. 'Do unto others as you would have done unto you.'" Vader snorted. "Hopelessly naive way to live your life or useful philosophy?"

It was very obvious which option Vader preferred.

He pointed towards the first student. "Let's begin."

"Not dying is always preferred," Vader said dryly. "Was Miss Sun a harsh taskmaster?"

"I've always thought so," Stark agreed. "I like being not dead. And no. But she didn't have any reason to be."

Vader tilted his head. "No complaints, then?" he asked. "Nothing you'd prefer she'd have done differently?"

Stark thought about that for a moment and shook his head. "No. Nothing I can think of."

"How fortunate for you," Vader said dryly. "A perfect teacher."

"I didn't say she was perfect," Stark said, trying not to roll his eye. "Just that I don't know what else she could have done."

"Perhaps you should have paid closer attention then," Vader said sourly.

Fun guy, that Vader.

"I thought it was more important to pay attention to what I was doing," Stark answered. "So the ship didn't explode."

"So that I will be able to pay attention to what everyone else is doing wrong?" Stark asked. "And not just focus on what I'm supposed to be doing?"

"Precisely," Vader said. "It's how you advance."

In Vader's world, anyway.

"What about the times you aren't trying to advance?"

"Then you are making sure no one is trying to replace you," Vader replied. "Not paying attention leads to a very short life."

"I suppose that makes sense," Stark said, though he was sure there wasn't anyone looking to replace him.
