Ethics [Thursday, October 26, 6th period]

Vader swept into the room precisely on time, the door slamming behind him like usual. "I trust that your time with your relatives was excruciating and uncomfortable. I do not care about your problems to begin with, and if you try to use them as an excuse for why your assignment is not complete, I will not care even more." The leather creaked in his gloves. "So don't try it." It wasn't a suggestion.

He paced in front of the classroom. "While I am interviewing you all separately--" the menace in his voice was completely intentional, "--the rest of the class will be discussing the Golden Rule. 'Do unto others as you would have done unto you.'" Vader snorted. "Hopelessly naive way to live your life or useful philosophy?"

It was very obvious which option Vader preferred.

He pointed towards the first student. "Let's begin."

Bel scowled. "If I hadn't been interrupted at Homecoming I would've crushed his head against a wall and then fireballed whatever was left of him."

"Impressive," Vader replied. "How would you have dealt with any possible fall out? Someone missing Mr. Echolls, for instance, or coming in at an unfortunate moment?"

He was curious, not angry. Far from it.

"Someone did come in at an unfortunately moment, that's why he's still breathing," Bel grumbled. "Nobody'd miss him. Well, one person, but not like they can blame me if there's no body to pin it on me." Oh, no, he didn't fantasize about this ever so often.

"And making them disappear as well would have been inconvenient?" Vader asked.

"I guess it would depend on who it was," Bel said. He sighed. "I shouldn't be talking about things like this, I'm trying to be good and all, but Echolls pisses me off so much."

"Anger and hatred give you power," Vader said, showing more passion for the subject than anything else he'd talked about. "Don't ignore that just because it makes others uncomfortable. Their squeamishness should not be your concern."

"Yeah, I'm always stronger when I'm mad," Bel agreed. "But I've been trying to keep my temper under control."

Vader tilted his helmet. "You are voluntarily making yourself weaker? Why?"

Bel frowned a little, he didn't look at it quite that way. "I'm trying to be more human and less demon," he said.

"Humans have tempers, too," Vader pointed out.

"Yeah, true," Bel said. "But demon tempers are a lot worse."

"Has a demon ever built a machine for the express purpose of destroying a planet, then used it?" Vader asked.

"Demons aren't big on technology," Bel said. "We use a lot of magic and brute force."

"Technology is insignificant compared to the power of the Force," Vader said, nodding. "It's more a matter of commitment and follow-through."

"I've got that," Bel said. "Well, I did. When I was still evil."

"You still have it," Vader said, "you're just denying your true nature."

Bel looked disturbed, because just what his true nature was was something that had been bothering him for awhile. "I gotta change my true nature though," he said. "I can't live with humans if I can't act like one."

"Make them adjust," Vader said firmly.

"Somehow I don't think that would go over too well," Bel said.

"Do you want power or to make friends?" Vader asked, scorn heavy in his voice.

"Can't I have both?" Bel said. The human wanted friends and companionship. The demon wanted power.

"No."

Vader let that sink in for a moment, then waved his hand. "We are finished here."

Bel nodded and returned to his seat, his thoughts a little troubled.
