Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecasts had been calling for rain all week, so when it was time to get everything set up for the picnic and it was sunny and warm outside instead, well, that was hopefully a good sign of things to come.

There were tables set up all around the lawn of the school with blue and gold tableclothes and chairs, and the usual buffet of food (and ice cream!) was waiting for hungry folks to dig in. There was also a second table with nametags and lists to help the new people locate their siblings and roommates.

Once the food was ready and the tables were glittered, everything was set for a very pleasant picnic indeed.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

So, the shuttle had been kind of a wild ride. A weird ride. A... ride. Jughead hadn't been sure what to expect of this place to begin with, and getting here had done nothing to make him feel more prepared.

Still, he found himself vaguely relieved to find that at least whoever had been in charge of the name tags had been at the top of their game. No Forsythe Pendleton in sight. Just plain old Jughead. As much as the thought of literally labeling himself with anything was annoying, that was still a comfort.

So he slapped the nametag on, then took a look around. So. This was Fandom.

Merrill had not forgotten she was supposed to be helping out one of the new students today! She'd just gotten lost on her way to the picnic. Because that was a promising start, wasn't it?

Anyway, she was here now with a little border of flowers and vines drawn around her name on her nametag, and looking around for someone with "Jughead" on theirs. Or was that supposed to be a description? She wasn't --

"Oh, there you are!" Yes, that was a barefoot elf hurrying over to you, Jughead. "Hello! I'm Merrill, and they told me I was supposed to help introduce you to this place."

You know, after the guy with the flaming sword this morning on the shuttle, Jughead should've been a little better prepared to face barefoot elves.

But, he wasn't.

"Uh." That was an excellent start, wasn't it? "... Hi." Better. "I'm Jughead."

A beat.

"But I guess you already knew that."

"Yes, but I wasn't quite sure what you would look like," Merrill said cheerfully. "But welcome to the island! It's a nice place, I quite like it and I hope you will, too. Did you get in all right?"

Oh, boy, nametags. Those were cool. Summer took a few seconds wrinkling her nose and making faces at them before she pasted her Summer Smith as best she could on her pink tank top and immediately felt like a total nerd. She wondered what might happen if she changed her with a marker or pretended to be someone else instead, but ultimately decided that was too much work and generally not worth it. Nothing wrong with being just plain old Summer Smith.

Rey always felt awkward going around looking at people's nametags, but these were things you had to do at picnics.

"Summer?" she said, just in case. "Hi, I'm Rey."

Ha. Summer. Rey. There was a joke in there somewhere, but Summer didn't know what it was.

But she did know she was recycling that comment.

"Oh, hi, Rey," she said, "I'm Summer." Then she caught herself, shook her head, and laughed a little. "I mean, sorry, automatic response. You knew that. Also, I may have eaten a bunch of candy on the bus over here and I haven't had candy in a while, so the sugar rush is real."

After the shuttle ride, June could handle a little thing like a nametag. She printed JUNE IPARIS in her neatest block lettering, applied it squarely to her tunic, and watched for whoever was supposed to explain this place to her.

She would have rather figured things out on her own, but it seemed easiest to just play along for now.

And there was Eric, welcome basket in hand, looking around for June.

"Oh!" he chirped, bouncing a little in place when he spotted her. "There you are! Hello there, June! My name's Eric, welcome!" he said, once he'd made his way over to her.

Well, at least he seemed chipper? So that was something.

"Hi," June said, with a little wave. "Good to meet you. So this is going to be a weird question, but this isn't reform school or anything, is it?"

She wanted to be reassured about that before she asked anything else.

"What?" Eric said. "Oh, goodness, no, I don't know who's been telling you such things but that's not true at all. A little odd, sure, and to be fair it wouldn't surprise me if some of the people here had attended one at one point or another, but this place itself, no."

"This, by the way, is for you. A little 'Welcome to Fandom' package," he added, holding out the basket. Inside, June would find several mini-pies of varying flavors, a Fandom High school t-shirt, takeout menus for the various places on island, a couple of gift cards, and a map. The map did come with a "SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE" disclaimer, naturally.

The first thing Peebee did was to check over everything and make sure her full name hadn't snuck its way onto any records somehow.

The second thing was to grab a marker and a nametag that she promptly scrawled a large ??? on. Pfft. Why make that easy on anyone?

. . . okay, so she relented and wrote "Peebee" in tiny letters over the question marks, not immediately noticeable but legible if you took a few seconds to look. She was going to make people work for it. Sorry, big sibling!

Ringo had gotten to the picnic late. Mostly because she'd been incredibly weirded out when she'd realized she'd woken up on the fourth floor of the dorms rather than the fifth.

And that there wasn't a fifth floor anymore.

But then she'd remembered that it was picnic day, and that she had a little sibling to go help, so she'd put on a pair of ATs and rushed over.

Now she was sort of slowly cruising around looking around a tiny bit desperately hoping that "Peebee", whoever that was, wasn't feeling totally lost and abandoned.

Luckily, the ATs caught Peebee's attention, and she headed Ringo's way in a hurry.

"Okay," she said, "I have to know how those work. They look like fun."

Ringo glanced over at Peebee's nametag, but didn't look hard enough to notice letters over the giant question marks. Still, even if she needed to find her new little sibling, she couldn't exactly let a comment like that go unanswered.

So she turned and beamed. "It's a miniaturized electric motor and gear system," she answered, balancing effortlessly on one foot as she lifted the other to bring the AT closer so it was easier to see. "Controlled by shifts in weight and movement of the foot inside the boot."

Pretty sweet, right?

"And they are fun." The most fun!

That shuttle ride had been... something else. He kinda had an idea how Zack's first, unmorphed, ride in his Zord had been, now.

Looking around at that food spread, the welcome banner, and the... glitter... Jason was starting to get the feeling this wasn't the reform school that the Sheriff's Department thought it was. Which was just fine with him, really. Because his name appeared to be on the roster so as long as everyone concerned figured he was supposed to be here, he wasn't going to correct anyone.

Nametag firmly affixed, he went to go look for this 'Peridot' who was supposed to be his 'big sibling' or whatever.

Peridot, meanwhile, couldn't see much more than people's nametags from down there. She had her own nametag on, stuck into her hair so that it would be at least somewhat close to eye level, and was looking around for a... Jason?

Humans had such weird names.

"You! Are you the Jason I've been assigned to mentor?"

"Unless there's another Jason around... here..." he trailed off, tensing somewhat as he noticed the voice was coming from someone small... and green... with a gem in their forehead.

Look, his last experience involving someone in possession of a green gem (That Peridot wasn't so much "in possession" of a gem as "actually was" one was not a thing Jason was actually aware was possible, so forgive him for not realizing that fact) had ended with him backhanding her out into space while piloting a giant robot. So, yes, he was going to to be on his guard a little bit. But he wasn't allowed to start fights, thanks to Zordon's rules, so. He was just gonna narrow his eyes at her and nod. "Hello."

Oh. Oh stars, that was a hostile greeting if ever Peridot had gotten one. Maybe not as hostile as the time the Garnet had crushed her by her middle until she'd lost her physical form entirely, but... it was up there.

Peridot gave an uncomfortable glance around, looking to see if maybe there was some other travel-sized person in the vicinity that he might be glowering at, but... no. She was it.

She cleared her throat, and offered him her best bright smile anyway.

"I think you're the only one. I know I'm the only Peridot. Welcome to the island?"

She could have tried to sound a little more sure of herself, there. But, well. That was some look he was giving her.

Pinkie was totally ready to meet her very first school assigned little sib.

BEST DAY EVER!

She hoped her new little sib liked cupcakes. And balloons. And confetti. She may have gone overboard. . . . Nahhhh. There was no such thing!

Big sibling? What did Jyn need with a big sibling? She preferred to handle things on her own, thank you very much. But she'd grudgingly put on her nametag as she wandered around the picnic, trying to get a feel for the place.

"You must be Pinkie," she said. "I'm Jyn."
