Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecasts had been calling for rain all week, so when it was time to get everything set up for the picnic and it was sunny and warm outside instead, well, that was hopefully a good sign of things to come.

There were tables set up all around the lawn of the school with blue and gold tableclothes and chairs, and the usual buffet of food (and ice cream!) was waiting for hungry folks to dig in. There was also a second table with nametags and lists to help the new people locate their siblings and roommates.

Once the food was ready and the tables were glittered, everything was set for a very pleasant picnic indeed.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Luckily, the ATs caught Peebee's attention, and she headed Ringo's way in a hurry.

"Okay," she said, "I have to know how those work. They look like fun."

Ringo glanced over at Peebee's nametag, but didn't look hard enough to notice letters over the giant question marks. Still, even if she needed to find her new little sibling, she couldn't exactly let a comment like that go unanswered.

So she turned and beamed. "It's a miniaturized electric motor and gear system," she answered, balancing effortlessly on one foot as she lifted the other to bring the AT closer so it was easier to see. "Controlled by shifts in weight and movement of the foot inside the boot."

Pretty sweet, right?

"And they are fun." The most fun!

Peebee leaned closer to peer at it. "Oooooh, that's nice. Almost more sophisticated than I expected to find on this planet, but it's been full of surprises so far, and I've only been here a couple of hours. I should probably try and track down the big sibling who's supposed to be assigned to me, but I almost want to just see how those work when you really put them through their paces."

"I thought you looked new!" Ringo grinned. "If you tell me who you got assigned, I can probably help you track them down. I've been here long enough to at least vaguely know most of the other students?"

She sighed. "And then I probably should find my little sibling before I get sucked into discussing how awesome AirTrek are."

Sigh.

"It's -- hang on." Peebee took a second to bring up her omni-tool and check on the registration email she'd received. "Ringo. Ringo Noyamano?"

She waved a hand. "Whoever you're looking for, they'll probably be fine. I want to hear all about how awesome AirTrek are."

Ringo blinked.

Then giggled.

"Well, in that case, I think you might be in luck. Because, as it happens, I'm Ringo."

She pursed her lips thoughtfully. "Unless there's two of me around for some reason."

"Are there two of you running around here? There could be! Wonder how that would work?" Peebee was clearly already intrigued by this idea, tapping a gloved finger against her lips and bouncing on her toes for a moment before she laughed and spread her hands in a vaguely surrender-like gesture. "Okay, okay, I'm the person you're looking for, then. How's that for luck?"

"Super-lucky," Ringo agreed with a grin.

"Especially since it means that there's no reason not to talk about AirTrek now!"

Oh. Wait.

Ringo deflated slightly. "Though, um, I guess I should offer to explain anything, or, you know, answer any questions you have about the island first?" You know. Be responsible.

Boring.

"Oh, I have plenty of questions about the island," Peebee assured her, "but we'd be here all week at least if I asked them all, and it'd take most of the fun out of finding out if I did, so don't worry. I'll just stick to the really important stuff. I already get that different realities and timelines intersect here, and I can't wait to find out more about how that all works, but does that ever get really, really weird? Awkward-weird, I mean."

"Hmm. I suppose that really depends on what you find 'awkward'?" Ringo considered that for a moment, then shook her head. "Actually, it probably doesn't. So many things happen that I think everyone has to find some of them awkward."

"Like, waking up to find yourself a different gender, or to have memories from a totally different life, or to have children that belong to some future version of yourself."

Did any of that sound awkward?

"Good point. Everything's awkward to someone," Peebee agreed. "And . . . huh. I actually think most of that sounds like a lot of fun! Except the children part. Noooooooooo thank you."

She tilted her head. "Also, what's the deal with the glitter?"

Ringo shrugged. "You know, I don't totally know? I mean, I know it's kind of a Fandom tradition, but I don't exactly know why?"

She grinned. "Except that it looks pretty cool?"

"It's definitely sparkly, I'll give it that," Peebee said, "even if I get the feeling I'm going to be picking it out of everywhere by the end of the day. Wonder what started that tradition?"

She was probably going to love the answer when she found it out.

"Soooooo. What do people do around here for fun? Off the wall definitions of fun count too. The more off the wall the better, actually."

"Since that's what I do for fun."

"Oooo, then you're already going to be more interesting than my actual big sister," Peebee decided. "Aside from, you know, not being five hundred years older than me. So, AirTrek! You already gave me an idea of how it works, but how many practical applications of fun are there?"

"Well, if they just had puny little motors in them, probably not much. But the tech's pretty advanced, so they pack a lot of punch. If you know what you're doing, you can basically ride up the side of a building."

And that didn't even cover straightaway top speeds.

"Well, depends on tuning, and on technique, but a little experience and it's pretty simple to break 100 kilometers an hour."

Peebee . . . might already be trying to come up with ways to use her biotics for that.

"A hundred kilometers per hour, and basically on foot?" She was outright beaming now. "That. Sounds. Amazing."

"Ow," Peebee pretended to object, but she had to make a face as she admitted, "No, but as soon as I figure out what the sizing system is like here, I'll let you know, how's that?"

Yay, new things to research! It'd be more productive if she could stick to one or two at a time, but nooooooo.
