Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecasts had been calling for rain all week, so when it was time to get everything set up for the picnic and it was sunny and warm outside instead, well, that was hopefully a good sign of things to come.

There were tables set up all around the lawn of the school with blue and gold tableclothes and chairs, and the usual buffet of food (and ice cream!) was waiting for hungry folks to dig in. There was also a second table with nametags and lists to help the new people locate their siblings and roommates.

Once the food was ready and the tables were glittered, everything was set for a very pleasant picnic indeed.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

Summer had been warming up to this place quite a bit from the shuttle, she had to admit that, but the revelation that she'd be saddled with a roommate definitely didn't settle well with her. The pleasure of having her own bedroom wasn't something she took for granted, but something that she cherished and appreciated and made certain wasn't spoiled by nosy little brothers. But if having to share a room with someone else was the worst thing that happened to her here, then she guessed she'd come out okay.

Now it was just a matter of not butchering her roommate's name and sounding like an idiot. She narrowed her eyes as she read, not necessarily realizing she was testing it outloud. "Shy-emi Moriyama? Shee-me? Shy-my?"

Yeah, she was killing it...

Shiemi stood a little ways back, but not so far that she couldn't hear the girl. She giggled, somehow feeling more relaxed than the last time she'd met a new roommate.

"Shee-ehh-mee," she offered, the breeze moving her blonde hair and, somehow, the kimono she was wearing, as she approached the girl. "All the vowels, only you say it all at once so that you can't tell... Shiemi."

She smiled brightly. "You're 'Summer'? That's a very pretty name. W-welcome to Fandom Island."

[off to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but wanted to ping!]

For the briefest of moments, Summer thought of making up some weird way in which her name was pronounced, like Soo-mem-meyr, or something, but she had to live with this person and that could get weird. Besides, the girl seemed sweet so far, and Summer was feeling a rush of relief that if she was going to be living with someone, it would be someone nice.

Of course, she also knew appearances could be deceiving and someone who seemed nice could also totally marry your grandpa's best friend just to go on a massacre during the wedding in an attempt to put you grandpa in galactic jail and leave you a galactic fugitive. Fuck Tammy!

But that was neither here nor there. Summer smiled back. "Shiemi," she repeated back, and it sounded right, so she smiled a little more. "I like that a lot, too. And thanks. It looks like we're going to be roommates, huh?"

Nope. No, Shiemi was genuinely nice. Very nice. Really nice. Not even too nice, just... nice.

"Perfect!" Shiemi nodded at her pronunciation. "I hope you don't mind plants and flowers. I garden a lot and I work at the florist shop in town so sometimes I bring them home with me." A lot of the time. "If you're allergic, though, I can stop?"

"Oh, no!" Summer said, because, she, too, was just...nice, more often than not, unless you really cheesed her off. "Not at all! I love plants, oh, that's really cool! It's got to give the place a really nice, fresh, earthy feel. Are there lots of colors? I like color, so waking up surrounded by bright, beautiful flowers sounds amazing actually."

Okay, roommate thing might not be so bad. She just hoped Shiemi didn't expect her to take care of them if she ever went away for an extended amount of time, because those plants just might not make it.

Shiemi clapped her hands happily. "It does make it feel really like home and there's the wonderful smell of all the fresh air and the dirt!" They were going to get along just a well as she and her last roommate had, weren't they? Shiemi was so happy!

"I can definitely add more colours! Do you have a favourite? The soil here is good for almost anything, I've noticed. There's even a tree that grows a pillow-like thing!" Shiemi still wasn't sure if they counted as fruit or seeds or fronds.

"Pink." Summer didn't even hesitate and she would not be ashamed for unabashed girliness every once in a while. "Pink is always good. Or, like, growing them in an array like a rainbow, that would be bad ass."

Shiemi giggled happily. "I can do that! I can definitely definitely do that!"

"June and Jyn," June muttered to herself as she watched for her roommate. "Because that's never, ever going to be confusing."

Ugh, roommates? Jason rolled his eyes. Then he got a good look at the name, and a small flicker of hope was kindled.

Maybe Trini was here too, and someone had just mangled her name as usual? Except, he hadn't seen her on that ride (to use the term extremely loosely) in, so probably not.

Peebee wasn't thrilled about the prospect either; she liked having her own space.

Honestly, the thing that kept her from objecting outright was that there was this entire new and undocumented alien species for her to learn about and the only way to do that was to live with them.

So she went wandering around, looking for people with nametags, and finally spotted the one matching what she'd seen on the list.

"Hi," she said, the second she approached. "It's not you, it's me, let's just clear that up right now."

Yeah, Peebee, that phrase had some cultural connotations here that you might not be aware of.

"I mean, if I don't seem excited about this roommate thing. I didn't know that was going to be part of the deal. Probably should've looked into it. But I haven't decided I hate you yet, and who knows? I might not! Anyway, I'm not annoyed about you. It's just the general principle of the thing."

... Was everything in his life, including the people he met, going to be color coded now?

"Right," he squinted at her nametag. Well, it said 'Peebee' on there. Sort of. "Well, same, honestly."

Welcome to life as a Power Ranger, Jason. You were probably just going to be doomed to a life of color coding.

"Oh good, so long as we understand each other," Peebee said, waving both hands in a 'there you go' sort of gesture. "Don't go poking through my stuff, don't take it personally if I disappear for a few days at a time, and I think we're good."

"That seems fair," Jason had to admit. "So, Peebee, huh?" he said, after a beat. "That's... I wonder if they put us together on purpose."

"On purpose?" Give her a minute, Jason, she was brand new to the planet, let alone familiar with its foods. "Maybe. Why do you say that?"

Look, the only aliens he knew (before today) had been hanging out on Earth for 65 million years. So while it meant that he wasn't quite losing his shit at the fact that both his 'sibling' and roommate were clearly not human, he didn't exactly have loads of intergalactic cross-cultural experience here.

"Well, uh. Jay. Is a nickname for Jason. And- um, are you familiar with food from around here at all?" it finally occurred to him to ask, remembering Alpha's first exposure to M&Ms just a couple weeks ago.

"Not yet, but give me a week," Peebee told him. Seriously, as soon as she could be sure she could eat the food here (she probably should've checked on that too, before she arrived) she'd be trying ALL THE THINGS. "Seriously? I literally just set foot on this planet a couple of hours ago."

Pinkie didn't just get a whole new little sib, she got a whole new roommate!

Seriously, BEST. DAY. EVER!

She hoped her new roommate liked cupcakes. And balloons. And streamers. . . .

He could probably be plied with the cupcakes to forgive the balloons and streamers.

Jughead squinted at the roommate list. Then he took a look around himself. Was he going to have to find a nametag that said 'Pinkie Pie', or –– no, apparently not.

Or he was about to fall victim to some serious false advertising.

"Hey. You wouldn't happen to be Pinkie, by any chance?"

"That's me!" Pinkie said. "How'd you guess?"

It was a wonder.

"Just lucky," Jughead replied, just a touch sarcastic but not in a mean-spirited way. He stuck out his hand. "Jughead. Jones, if you wanna be particular. Sign says we're roommates?"

"We are!" Pinkie agreed, and tossed a handful of confetti into the air.

Hey, at least confetti didn't explode when she did that.

"I have welcome cupcakes for you! I hope you like chocolate!"

Jughead had been going for a handshake, not confetti. So that was really something else, and left him kind of bewildered.

Thankfully, the mention of cupcakes was a welcome distraction.

"I most definitely do," he said. "I mean, who doesn't?"

"I don't know," Pinkie said. "But it takes all sorts!"

She pulled a cupcake out of — a bag. She had to have a bag, right? People didn't summon cupcakes out of nowhere, that was just silly.

"I make these all the time! Perks of being my roommie!"
