Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecasts had been calling for rain all week, so when it was time to get everything set up for the picnic and it was sunny and warm outside instead, well, that was hopefully a good sign of things to come.

There were tables set up all around the lawn of the school with blue and gold tableclothes and chairs, and the usual buffet of food (and ice cream!) was waiting for hungry folks to dig in. There was also a second table with nametags and lists to help the new people locate their siblings and roommates.

Once the food was ready and the tables were glittered, everything was set for a very pleasant picnic indeed.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"On purpose?" Give her a minute, Jason, she was brand new to the planet, let alone familiar with its foods. "Maybe. Why do you say that?"

Look, the only aliens he knew (before today) had been hanging out on Earth for 65 million years. So while it meant that he wasn't quite losing his shit at the fact that both his 'sibling' and roommate were clearly not human, he didn't exactly have loads of intergalactic cross-cultural experience here.

"Well, uh. Jay. Is a nickname for Jason. And- um, are you familiar with food from around here at all?" it finally occurred to him to ask, remembering Alpha's first exposure to M&Ms just a couple weeks ago.

"Not yet, but give me a week," Peebee told him. Seriously, as soon as she could be sure she could eat the food here (she probably should've checked on that too, before she arrived) she'd be trying ALL THE THINGS. "Seriously? I literally just set foot on this planet a couple of hours ago."

"Well, how would I know?" Jason asked reasonably. "I mean, maybe you've been on Earth for ages. Anyway. Not my point. There's something called peanut butter? And when you put it together with jam- jay- it's PB & J. A kind of sandwich. Which makes me think whoever drew up the rooming assignments thought they were being funny."

"Peanut butter, huh?" Peebee tapped her chin with one finger. "That's good. I think I'll use that one, next time anyone asks me what it stands for. I'll probably have to try the actual stuff, too. Well, that's nice. Barely arrived, and we've already got a gimmick."

She fell silent for about 0.03 seconds.

"And for all you know, maybe I was on Earth for ages and I just wanted you to think otherwise."

Peebee. No.

"It's possible," Jason said with a shrug. "Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?" Okay, so he may be all cool and jaded now about the existence of aliens, but there was a part of him that was all jumping up and down about this in excitement.

On the inside. Because he was way too cool to actually let anything like that show.

"Oh, you know. Around," Peebee said, because she liked to try and be Mysterious, but relented a bit. "Hyetiana. You've probably never heard of it. Actually, I'm . . . not sure at all where it is, relative to Earth. It's somewhere else in this galaxy, though, and believe me, that's the most exciting thing I can tell you about it."

"Good to know even places that aren't on Earth can be boring," Jason said with a snicker. "Because that's totally familiar. The not-too-exciting part, I mean, because you're right, I have never heard of it."

"Because there's really nothing to hear about." Peebee rolled her eyes and faked a loud snore. "I was over the boredom, so when I found out about this place, obviously that was a trip I had to take."

See, and Port Lerama didn't even have an ancient spaceship hidden in a random gold mine.

But there were regular non-ancient spaceships! ... That were probably more or less the asari equivalent of Angel Grove's fishing boats. Never mind.

"Obviously. Is it living up to your non-boring expectations so far?" You know, in the like, hour or so that they'd been here.

Non-ancient by asari standards, anyway, so still pretty old. They probably didn't have cranky ancient beings stuck in walls in them either, though.

As far as anyone knew.

"Mmm. Not sure yet, the jury's still out on that," Peebee said, but she was rotating in place to get a look around her. "I mean, look at this island, it's tiny! Not to mention covered in stairs.
It'll be interesting, that's for sure."
