Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecasts had been calling for rain all week, so when it was time to get everything set up for the picnic and it was sunny and warm outside instead, well, that was hopefully a good sign of things to come.

There were tables set up all around the lawn of the school with blue and gold tableclothes and chairs, and the usual buffet of food (and ice cream!) was waiting for hungry folks to dig in. There was also a second table with nametags and lists to help the new people locate their siblings and roommates.

Once the food was ready and the tables were glittered, everything was set for a very pleasant picnic indeed.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Well, Jyn could see where her big sibling got her name at least. She really was...pink.

"You must be Pinkie," she said. "I'm Jyn."

"I must!" Pinkie agreed. "Welcome welcome welcome, Jyn! Have a cupcake!"

No really, Jyn, that cupcake was being thrust right in your face.

Why were the sprinkles glowing.

Jyn drank blue milk. Glowing sprinkles didn't worry her one bit. Unfortunately.

"Thanks," she said, inspecting the cupcake. Between it and the Skittles Jason had shared with her, she was expecting all food on this world to be brightly colored. "Do I eat this now?"

"If you want to!" Pinkie said, then her eyes went wide. (Her eyes were enormous. They went SO VERY WIDE.) "Looks like I got a little too excited transporting it. You're gonna wanna duck!"

And then the cupcake exploded. Or rather, the sprinkles on top of it exploded.

Thankfully, cupcakes weren't exactly full of shrapnel. So the results were mostly wacky windblown hair styles and a fine coating of crumbs and frosting.

"It's okay! I have more!"

Jyn jumped back and dropped the cupcake, muttering a few colorful curses as she did so. "What was that for?" she said, trying to wipe frosting from her face.

"Sorry!" Pinkie said. She dug out a handkerchief — yellow with blue polka dots — and offered it to Jyn. "That happens sometimes. I'm still learning to control it. Sprinkles are just too fun, I can't leave them off completely!"

Jyn took the handkerchief and rubbed her face, glaring at her big sibling.

"What do you mean, learning to control it?" she said. "Did you use the Force to do that?"

"Um," said Pinkie. "I don't know. What's the force?"

"The Force is...the Force," Jyn said, shrugging. She knew her mother had been a member of the Church of the Force, and she remembered some of the stories Lyra had told her. "It's a mystical energy that binds the universe together. Jedi used to be able to use it."

"Ooo, neat!" Pinkie said. ". . . What's a Jedi?"

Wasn't Pinkie supposed to be answering Jyn's questions?

"Doesn't matter, they're all dead now," Jyn said with another shrug. "They used the Force to protect the galaxy, that's what my mother told me. But I guess that didn't work out too well for them."

Pinkie frowned, concerned. "Who protects the galaxy now then?"

"Not my problem anymore," Jyn said with fake cheeriness, though she couldn't entirely hide the underlying bitterness.

Pinkie continued to frown for a few moments, then shrugged and brightened back up. "Okidokiloki! Do you have any questions about life in Fandom?"

Jyn looked around the picnic. "What do people do for fun around here?" she asked. It seemed a better question than "How do I get back home and leave this place behind?"

"Oh all sorts of stuff," Pinkie said. "There's a bowling alley and a movie theater and tons of restaurants in town and even a karaoke bar! And if you just want to stay in the dorms there's TV and video games and books and just hanging out and talking to people of course. And there's the whole preserve if you like nature and lots of beaches if you like swimming and if you go outside and just start talking to no one a whole bunch of funny green-blue deer will just walk right up to you!"

Slow down, Pinkie! Jyn was trying to process all that. "What's karaoke?" she asked. If it was in a bar, maybe it was something fun.

Pffft. Pinkie never slowed down.

"Omigosh! It's the most fun thing ever!!!" Also, she operated on hyperbole. "It's when you go up on stage and the band or the karaoke machine or whatever plays the background music and a little screen shows you the words and you sing!"

"...no," Jyn said flatly. That sounded like the opposite of fun. Singing? No.

Pinkie shrugged. "What do you like to do, then?"
