Library, 1/09

[chasingangela]

Angela isn't sure whether she's more frightened by the fact this is her first time opening the library, by the new students, or by the Librarian.

Her stomach is a mass of butterflies as she turns on the lights and takes a place behind the checkout desk, braced for the onslaught.

There's a stack of forms on the desk. Don't write you're a Chosen One -- it upsets the library. Use blue or black ink only.

Later, after she emerges from catatonia, Zero goes to file Fred's application and encounters a problem. "Angela? Is there something wrong with this app? Every time I try to put it in the drawer, the Library tells me that's wrong." She gives Angela a tired smile and says, "Library's talky today."

"Hey, so 327 didn't eat you," Angela greets Peter, glancing over his form before going to type up his card. "Here you go. This lets you check out anything, unless it's in Special Collections. You need a teacher's note for that."

Geoff stops at the desk and smiles at Angela. "Are teachers required to have a card as well? I stopped in just a couple of times for books last term, but I never really found out if I needed a card to get them."

The smile grows into a grin and he adds, "And I'm disappointed that we missed our meeting on Friday."

"Teachers should have one, but if we let you check things out without one last term, I guess we must have a form on file somehow?" Angela guesses. "Fill it out again just in case."

Anders has largely avoided the library all year long. Considering that his most memorable experience with it involved being stuck in an upper shelf in Special Collections while boiling, zombie-smelling water flooded the entire school, he's probably entitled.

But he's here today, and has decided to kill the hour between Classics and Dream's office hours by braving the library and even getting his library card, so he heads straight for the desk and fills out the form.

I'm not scared of big words, and I can read. I just don't do it very often, but I'm totally going to fix that this semester for reasons I think I'd better just keep to myself.

Zero comes in and glances at Anders's application. "This one's no good, Angela. He's gonna have to do it over. The first name's unreadable, and there's only a middle initial. I'm pretty sure Parker's the only one who gets away with that."

Angela takes the form and types into the computer. "How is your first day of classes going?" she asks. "And, um, you need to fill the form out again. our system will only issue a card with the exact name you enrolled under. The computer says Pippi's short for Pippilotta?"

"Sorry," she says apologetically as she gives Pippi a new form

Angela takes Callisto's paperwork and heads over to the compute. A moment later, she has a card, which she presents with a flourish.

"Ta-da. This will let you check out whatever, unless it's in Special Collections. You need a teacher's note to go in there."

Angela squints at Autolycus. "You look a lot like the old art teacher," she tells him, before going over and amiably processing his form. "Here's your card. Teachers can use anything in the library, in or out of special collections."
