Library, 1/09

[chasingangela]

Angela isn't sure whether she's more frightened by the fact this is her first time opening the library, by the new students, or by the Librarian.

Her stomach is a mass of butterflies as she turns on the lights and takes a place behind the checkout desk, braced for the onslaught.

Anders has largely avoided the library all year long. Considering that his most memorable experience with it involved being stuck in an upper shelf in Special Collections while boiling, zombie-smelling water flooded the entire school, he's probably entitled.

But he's here today, and has decided to kill the hour between Classics and Dream's office hours by braving the library and even getting his library card, so he heads straight for the desk and fills out the form.

Near the bottom, he adds the following:

I'm not scared of big words, and I can read. I just don't do it very often, but I'm totally going to fix that this semester for reasons I think I'd better just keep to myself.

Zero comes in and glances at Anders's application. "This one's no good, Angela. He's gonna have to do it over. The first name's unreadable, and there's only a middle initial. I'm pretty sure Parker's the only one who gets away with that."

"And that's only because her daddy bribed the school with a donation," said Janet, smirking. "Her school records don't read 'Maureen Parker.' The name on the card actually has to match what you're registered in the school as."

Anders gives Zero and Janet a playful but incredibly wounded look and redoes his form.

In very deliberate print, as small as he can manage it while still making it readable, he adds:

Samuel Throgmorten Anders
in the name field, and covers it with his hand as he slides the form back across the desk.

He sticks his tongue out at Zero. "See if I ever give you gumballs again. Or jujubes, either," he adds, tapping the holstered Palm Pilot on his belt with an embarrassed wink.

"Thank you, Samuel," Angela says cheerfully. "Can I still have candy?"

Anders makes a face at Angela, but pulls the Palm out of its holster, presses the added button, and dispenses a half dozen or so Jujubes onto the desk. "Y'know, Chase, it's a good thing I like you."

"it really is, isn't it?" Angela says, grinning with a green jujube between her teeth.

"It is," says Anders, shaking his head and grinning. "Do I get my card now?"

"Yes," Angela says, typing up the card and handing it over. "Guard it with your life. And you still need a teacher's note to get into Special Collections."

"No thanks, I think once was enough in my life. Not going in there again if I can help it." He pulls out his wallet and tucks the card carefully away inside. "Thanks, Angela."
