The Library Is Open (11/3/05)

Janet dragged herself from Criminal Justice to the library, unlocked it, and tried to decide if she felt like working today sat down behind the Collections Desk. She started checking in books very, very slowly.

"Good morning, Janet."

Janet looked up, surprised. "You're finally back?" she asked. "You know, the next time you're called away on urgent business, you should leave the note where I can find it."

She's fairly sure he'll take the hint and go with the cover story she concoted.

He grins at her. "Right. Very bad of me. Next time, I'll even leave a phone message."

Parker makes a "pfffttttt" noise at this as she spins back and forth. "Where'd you go, anyway?"

"I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. And I like you too much to kill you." Methos grins at her.

Parker considers that a moment, and then grins as she twirls. "Good to know. I may use that knowledge later, James Bond. Just so you know."

"Oooh," says Janet. "I feel special." She grins back and offers him a piece of chocolate.

Methos accepts chocolate happily. "Thank you, Janet." He catches her eyes and holds them for a moment. "For everything," he adds softly.

"You're welcome," she says quietly. "You know, call if you need anything."

"And I need a note to get cleared on missing Criminal Justice last Thursday, by the way."

Methos leans behind the counter, grabs a sheet of paper, and scrawls:

"Ms. Frasier was unavoidably detained on library business last Thursday, 27 October. Please excuse her absence. Signed, Adam Pierson, Librarian."

Parker hands him a coffee while she listens to Fraiser give him a hard time, then chimes in, "It would kill you to send us a postcard?"

Sitting down behind the counter, she spins on one of the revolving stools. "Also, we had to clean the place up while you were gone again. Fraiser did most of it. And the Library likes Zero. Possibly in a special way."

"Preferably a pretty one," said Janet, grinning at Parker. "With tropical scenery. And tell your friend to time his crisis for a day when Parker isn't giving Wilson a hard time and Zero's not in Locker 327."

"And what's up with the Library and Zero? Can it like me in a non-special way, please?"

"I think it already likes both of us in a non-special way, at least Zero thinks so. Hey, did that one professor ever come out of the stacks? Or did the books eat him?"

Parker grinned. "I had fun in the clinic, once the burning pain was dealt with. Reminds me. How *is* Vomiting Victor? He still owes me shoes."

"He's sleeping, last I heard." Sam came in and threw her bag on one of the library tables, catching the last part of Parker's question. "And you probably want to pick the shoes out yourself and send him the bill...you wouldn't believe what he could come up with on his own."

She grinned and took a bite of an apple. "Or maybe you would, having seen his side of the room."

Parker shuddered. "So noted. Maybe I'll pick 'em out, order them, and then go by to freak him out with the bill later." She spins around and says, "How's your day, Carter?"

"Oh, good," says Janet, unaccountably pleased. She's actually grown fond of the Library. "You know, I don't think I've ever seen him again I think he vanished in The Great Journal Deletion Of Parents Weekend. Maybe Special Collections turned him into a newt and he never got better?"

Janet snickered. "Jack is slowly getting better. Sam and I keep checking up on him. So does Charlie, but we don't tell him we know that." She frowned. "I'm reading his sorry ass the riot act when he gets out."

"So we chalk up one missing person as having wandered into Special Collections and never wandered out again? Yes, yes he did."

"For being an idiot and getting pneumonia, or aiming for my shoes? Jerk." Parker twirls again, then hops off the spinning stool to pick up some books and begin organizing them. "But hey, I get new shoes out of it. Possibly more than one pair. I can't believe his 'dad' hasn't caught on about that credit card yet."

Methos takes the coffee and leans against the collections desk, watching the chaos of the library swirl around him. "Would you believe me if I said that, where I was, there were no postcards? And I'm quite... disturbed to discover that about the library. Although I cannot fault... his? her? its? taste."

"You really can't. But if it can get Zero to accidentally sign a contract in blood, I guess it can get a crush on her. Although what it wants aside from regular shelving and compliments, I can't begin to imagine."

"It doesn't eat chocolate, does it?" asked Janet warily, eyeing the box she'd left on the Collections Desk. "Because once I left a candy bar in here over night, and--" She frowned. "I thought it was the gremlins."

Parker looked intrigued. "What would it *do* with it?"

Methos grins at her. "So are you, Zero. Last I heard, you were investigating Locker 327 for science. What was the eventual result?"

I can't decide whether it's got squallin' awful or truly swerval timin'. It brought me back or whatever right before I went up in flames.
