The Library Is Open (11/3/05)

Janet dragged herself from Criminal Justice to the library, unlocked it, and tried to decide if she felt like working today sat down behind the Collections Desk. She started checking in books very, very slowly.

"I do not!" exclaimed Janet. She stuck her tongue out at Sam. "You've just known me way, way too long."

Janet nibbled at one side of her mocha truffle. "If your raspberry truffle has alcohol in it too, I'm going to be jealous."

"Isn't that the truth," Sam grinned, liking a stray bit of raspberry filling off her bottom lip. "We know where all the bodies are buried."

"No, no alcohol. Just raspberry. Which is enough, trust me."

"Sad, but true," said Janet cheerfully as she very interestedly watched as the filling disappeared off Sam's lip. "Not only do we know where they are, but we also have no shame about using the knowledge to our advantage."

Janet licked some of the mocha out of the inside of her truffle. "Oh, absolutely." She looked at the box, then at Sam. "But how do we decide who gets dibs on the mint truffle?"

"No shame whatsoever," Sam agreed as she in no way licked her lip again so that Janet could watch.

"There's only one mint one? Darn it," she pouted as she watched how dexterously Janet licked out the inside of her truffle. "Well, they're yours, so I guess you're entitled to it."

"And yet we can certainly stand to live with ourselves, can't we?" asked Janet thinking about licking the filling off Sam's lip herself next time.

"Only one mint one, but also only one hazelnut." Janet grinned at the expression on Sam's face and scooped the rest of the filling out of the truffle with her finger, then licked it clean just to see how Sam would react. "It's going to be a tough decision."

"We do. I'm so embarrassed. Can't you tell?"

"Hmm. Tough decision, but again, they're yours. You pick." Sam offered and in no way locked her gaze on Janet's finger. "I'm generous like that, see?"

"You're blushing," said Janet. "At least somewhere in an alternate universe, there's a Sam Carter who's blushing."

"I want the mint, I think," said Janet who absolutely had not made sure that she'd been very flirtatious and suggestive at all when licking filling off her finger. "And yes, you're very generous with my truffles."

"I feel very sorry for her, then. And somewhere, in an alternate universe, there's a Sam Carter who's sweet and innocent, is a good cook, and has never even heard of Jack O'Neill. It's gotta be a strange place."

"Okay," Sam said, and not at all pouting, "I'll take the hazelnut then, if you have no objections. And I bought you a box just a few weeks ago! If I keep a box in my room, they disappear within hours, which is why I keep mooching yours."

"Is it possible that there's an alternate universe where you haven't heard of Jack?" asked Janet. "I'll grant the cooking as a possibility. I'll even grant the 'sweet and innocent' as an extremely slim possibility. But I can't imagine a universe where you two don't know each other."

Janet gave Sam a look. "If you really want the mint, it's yours." And not at all because you pouted, really. She laughed. "If I had any objections, I wouldn't have pulled the box out and offered. But why do they disappear in your room? Is your roommate a truffle-stealing thief, or do you just keep eating them?"

"According to quantum theory, there's an infinite number of possible alternate universes...there's got to be at least one of them where I don't know Jack," she shrugged, realizing she might be losing her audience, "After all, there are at least two where Daniel wasn't involved in Deep Space Radar Telemetry, and I can't imagine that, either."

Sam eyed the mint truffle, then selected a different one. "No, I'm good with the hazelnut, really." She blushed. "I keep eating them. It's a weakness."

Janet grinned. She remembered that one, really, but it was kind of fun watching Sam get started. "Daniel not being around the rest of us something like that is completely unimaginable."

"If you insist." Janet took the mint truffle and bit it in half. "So instead you just prey on my weakness for chocolate and my willingness to share?" She laughed. "Which I don't mind, of course, and that's why you do it."

"For you especially, I'm sure," Sam teased, reaching over to poke Janet.

"Yep." She took a bite of the truffle in her hand. "Your faults are saving me from single-handedly keeping Wonka chocolates in business. So, thanks."

"Yeah, well, I'm particularly attached to Daniel," said Janet, batting at Sam's hand. "In a different way than you or Jack are."

"If it lands me more chocolate?" Janet laughed. "Then I'm more than willing to help out."

"And thank goodness for that!" Sam made a face as she thought about things that maybe didn't sound so horrible and were so pretty the idea of Jack and Daniel as a couple." And then she promptly started laughing.

"I'll remember that," Sam chuckled.

"Things would start getting a little too interesting for our own good maybe awkward." Janet's face nearly matched Sam's at the thought of Jack and Daniel as a couple, and she leaned on the desk while she was giggling helplessly.

"I had no doubts."

"Interesting Awkward is a good word for it," Sam said, as her laughs tapered off. "And oh, my god, they'd kill each other."
